Default Spy Shots: Mercedes-Benz GLA crossover spotted

Back in July, Mercedes-Benz officially confirmed plans for an all-new compact crossover, and now we're finally getting our first look at the new model to be called the GLA-Class. Based on the same platform used for the new A-Class and B-Class models, the GLA-Class will go up against the BMW X1.

From these spy shots, it looks like the GLA will get a sportier, more rounded shape that fits in better with the A-Class hatchback rather than other SUVs like the GL-Class and GLK-Class. Compared to the A-Class, which will likely be coming to the U.S. in 2013, the GLA-Class will be more accommodating to rear occupants with larger rear door openings. This test mule also reveals a panoramic sunroof that stretches all the way back to the C-pillar.

The GLA-Class will be built alongside the A- and B-Class in Rastatt, Germany, and it is expected to go into production in 2014. In addition to the A-Class, B-Class and GLA-Class, this platform will also underpin the CLA-Class four-door coupe and SLA-Class roadster.

There's still no word as to whether the GLA will be offered in the U.S., but recent reports that the B-Class will only be available as an EV here leaves plenty of space in the Mercedes lineup for a small utility vehicle like this.

I love the GLA concept. Much better than the actual GLK ute. Appears more wide, low, agressive, less frumpy

The rear haunches at the rear quarter panel worry me a bit

a little odd too I admit, but I still prefer this profile to the current production GLK IMO

Default Mercedes GLA to arrive in early 2014

Mercedes GLA to arrive in early 2014

Mercedes-Benz will be expanding its crossover range with the addition of the new GLA-Class, a prototype of which we recently spied inside and out. Now, Auto Express reports that the small CUV will go on sale in early 2014 following its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September.

When the GLA arrives, Auto Express expects it to command roughly 5,000 British pounds more than its A-Class hatchback platform mate (seen in the US market as the CLA-Class sedan), for a starting price of around 20,370 pounds, or about $31,000 based on current exchange rates. Of course, that's all purely speculative at this point, but since the CLA starts at just under $30,000 here in the States, an entry point of somewhere between $30-35k for the GLA doesn't sound too far off.

The GLA will compete directly with the Audi Q3 and BMW X1, and when it arrives in the States, we expect it to use the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine as the CLA. Both front- and 4Matic all-wheel-drive models are expected to be offered, and a hotter GLA45 AMG version will follow later on.

pretty sure the GLA is an addition. Seems they have their core RWD based C, E, CLS, S, GLK, ML, GL, G, SLK, SL, SLS, and now the FWD based A, B, CLA and GLA are filling holes and priced slightly less than an equivalent sized MBZ

Just seems like with these smaller CUVs there really is no solid advantage over most midsized sedan unless you have dogs or like to make large Costco runs. When you look at the styled rears on these models they kill the storage area in the back ( kinf of like our old 2011 Murano). Just dont see the appeal
