1 - Range comparable to gas vehicles
2 - Highly available high speed (<15 minutes) charging
3 - Handling and performance comparable to gas vehicles
4 - Passenger & cargo space comparable to gas vehicles.

When I don't have to compromise.

When an electric car could be my only car.

Which means...if I need to drive across 3 states, I can. So, either the range gets significantly improved...or the charge-time gets signficantly improved.

I would buy an electric car when all the other cars in the market are electric cars.

Rather than typically having two/four motors at each wheel with no gear box, driving directly, I'd buy one if you but a single big electric motor under the bonnet, and then connect it to the regular gear box, to drive the front or rear wheels.
Now, wouldn't this improve the performance, efficiency, and noise levels of the electric car??????

Electric car would be a tough sell to me under any circumstance. To get me to even consider one, I think you'd have to start with range and recharge time at least in the same ballpark as what gasoline cars have now.

Not really, because any savings in fuel cost would have to be balanced against the costs of owning an EV. It's never as simple as just looking at gas versus electricity costs. For example, the shortcomings I mentioned above (range, recharge time) would necessitate me still owning some type of gasoline-based car for my basic travel needs, so I would have to factor in the significant additional costs of a secondary car.

Mark my words, the electric car will NEVER be the replacement for gas cars. They will never even take a sizable market share. I still have yet to see even ONE electric car in my life, and they've been out for some time. Even people that heavily advocate for them, won't sign on the dotted line for one.

For them to be a commercial success, these things would have to happen....

- at least 300-400 mile range (enough to drive all day for long road trips) - OR, the ability to fully recharge in less than 15 minutes (highly unlikely)
- massive charging infrastructure that would cost many 100's of billions
- no (or very small) cost premium over what a regular gas car would cost
- no compromise in trunk/cargo space

Too much to ask? Why should it be? Gas cars do everything we want, cheaply, and with an extremely abundant resource.

Electric cars need a huge breakthrough in battery technology, to make viable.
Even the lithium ion battery isn't enough for electric cars...

with essentially no moving parts (except motor commutator) an electric vehicle should be more reliable than anything. and the new tesla is incredibly fast.

yes of course... for instance, $40k for Rav4 EV would be good proposition if you paid $500 per week for gas :-)

i dont know if this is truly the case but I've had a few family members own camry Hybrids within the last few years and have complained so much about problems mechanically and constantly servicing them
