The Mazda Miata my dad has owned for 6 years has had two problems the whole time he has owned it. 2 alternators. He said, I quote, "This is by far the most reliable car I have ever owned".
Miata's are recommended, as well as older LS400's as you probably already know...

I just bought a clean 98 Integra for 5k. I had been looking at Miatas and civics. Integra has been everything I needed.
I wouldn't buy a 5k SC400. SC400's are never the actual purchase price. I have owned two of them and there is always something to maintain/fix. Loved them both, their just not a car that you can start/stop, drive here, drive there and never have to worry about something needing to be repaired (both interior or mechanical) The 1UZFE engines are awesome, but it's all the other stuff that will be at their lifespans when the car is 5k.

You get Corolla durability in a more practical small wagon format.
The Pontiac labeling gets you a cheaper price than the same car that is labeled Toyota Matrix
I bought my son an 09 AWD and I use it now for my winter beater/I don't care where I park in the city car and it is great.
