Most of the time our spy shots reveal the sexy new lines of the latest sports car or some subtle curves that hint at the new direction for a midsize sedan. Today things are a little different. Boxier, more van-like. Yet the forthcoming 2013 Ford Transit our spy shooters captured roaming the streets of Detroit is unlike any cargo van Americans have ever known.
For the first time, Ford has deemed us worthy of getting a version of its European workhorse. If you've been following the drama, the venerable E-Series van is slated for the long walk into the sunset. That's right, millions of plumbers, delivery guys, shuttle bus drivers and even a few ****-carpet-loving conversion van aficionados are going to have to learn to love a new mistress.
Ford has hinted that the American version of the Transit will be truckier than the curvy European version previewed by the Transit Tourneo Custom Concept. Expect it to look like a cross between the European model and an F-150. Ford has said the van will be powered by a version of the 3.5-liter EcoBoost that's already under the hood of the F-150, and that there will be a diesel variant as well.

if the hints are true for what the production model is to come, i think ford will have a winner
i wonder how the sprinter did in the NA though seeing how it is so pricey and i wonder how this new transit will compare in price

Its about time. I like the E, in fact I own an E350, but its needs taller rear door and more height on the inside. You can't even fit a 4x8 plywood in the E - gotta slide it in on an angle. The new Transit will solve this problem, however I'm concerned about its durability. From what I know, the Transit is built on IRS vs solid axle on the E.

We love the Transit Connect that we got for deliveries, but sometimes I do wish it was a foot or so longer, with a better powertrain.
Only problem we would have with the full size Transit is if it's taller than the Connect, then we can't fit it in the garage. Hopefully they'll offer a low roof version along with the high top pictured above.
Way easier to drive versus our old Sprinter. The Sprinter was just too much for us overall.

Also, can't we get some real axles under that truck? 5 lug wheels....really? I guess if you need to haul cotton candy they'll do....
EDIT: I wonder what the diesel option will be. Perhaps they're going to bring their Duratorq engine to the states.

The redesigned 2014 Transit Connect isn't the only commercial van news coming out of Ford today. For heavy-duty haulers, the automaker has officially pulled back the cover on its larger Transit van, which will eventually replace the older-than-dirt E-Series here in the United States.
In both North America and Europe, Ford will offer the new Transit in a wide variety of body styles, incorporating both long and short wheelbases, as well as standard- and tall-roof variants. And as we've already learned, Ford will build the U.S.-spec Transit in Kansas City, Missouri, right alongside the F-150 pickup.
European customers will be able to choose between front-, rear-, and all-wheel-drive versions of the Transit, powered by Ford's 2.2-liter Duratorq TDCi diesel inline-four. In the United States, however, only rear-wheel drive will be offered, though in addition to a "powerful diesel option," we'll be able to spec our Transit models with Ford's tried-and-true 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6.

Ford will offer Transit's 3.7-liter V6 with a compressed natural gas/liquid propane gas (CNG/LPG) prep kit to assist customers running their vehicles with this abundant, affordable, clean fuel alternative. The 3.7-liter V6 is also engineered for optimal performance with E85 flex- fuel capability.
The all-new 3.2-liter Power Stroke five-cylinder common rail turbo diesel, based on Ford's proven Duratorq global diesel engine architecture, features state-of-the-art fuel, turbo and emissions systems that meet stringent U.S. clean diesel standards, providing an ideal balance of fuel economy and job capability.
For maximum capability, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost promises to be a trusted workhorse, whether carrying materials to the job site or towing a trailer with Transit's available Class IV hitch.
Each engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission for efficient rear-wheel-drive operation.
Biggest range ever
For Transit, the power of choice goes beyond powertrain options to encompass multiple lengths and three roof heights to provide full-size van buyers with the precise combination and configuration they require.
The high-roof Transit features 81.5 inches of interior cargo height, enough headroom for a person six feet, five inches tall to stand upright in the cargo area. Cargo volume ranges from about 250 to almost 500 cubic feet as a jumbo configuration – nearly 80 percent more space than the largest E-Series – and over twice the volume of today's standard E-Series. Essentially, one jumbo van can haul the volume of two current models in a fuel-efficient manner.
Transit's rear cargo doors can open up to 270 degrees for easy loading and unloading.
