Honda Accord, Fit and Pilot to receive Dreamy new engines, CVTs

The reason they have so much money is because they're hardly even trying and selling arguably sub-standard cars in more than a few cases with technologies that have long since paid for themselves to overly loyal customers who are still happy to pay way more money than they should be all for that beloved "H" emblem.
A lot of companies would kill for customers like those.
Wow CVTs, direct injection, and finally some 6 speed transmissions. Welcome Honda you've finally made it... to 2007!

At the end of the day, most drivers keep their cars longer and longer nowadays. And Honda cars will EASILY last you 10 years with minimal problems.
My mom has a 5th gen accord, and my dad has a 6th gen accord and both have been as bulletproof as can be.

How did you get SOHC from this?

Sorry there's multiple threads on this and thought I had posted this link here also:

[ 3.5L class engine ]
Employs new valve train mechanisms and direct injection technology in the SOHC, VTEC, VMC systems to improve by over 10%*3 of fuel efficiency and 5%*3 of output, relative to the present standalone engine model.

On the CVT...
So a 10% improvement with their CVT vs a 5AT, except that everybody has long since moved on from 5-speed automatics except for Honda. Other manufacturers have also claimed 10% efficiency improvements if not more with their 6/7/8-speed automatics. So not surging ahead here either. Their efficiency might be competitive but doubtful it will be class leading.
Their new direct-injected 3.5L still-SOHC V6...
310hp/265tq. Hmmm...
VQ35HR: 306hp/268tq
2GR-FSE: 306hp/277tq
So after nearly 10 years Honda finally manages to get a whole 4hp more from their 3.5L class engine than their Japanese rivals Lexus and Infiniti, but still come up short on torque. Some things just never change. 10 years of progress in action, eh?
Can they beat GM?
3.6L DOHC VVT V6: 323hp / 278tq (Camaro). Work it out by hp and torque per liter and...
Nope.
Not bashing SOHC engines as the Honda J-series V6s are simple, elegant, and efficient engines. But premium cars need premium engines, and the bottom line is that SOHC saves THEM money. They seem to have this "two cams per vehicle" philosophy. So all the 4-cylinders can get DOHC and more advanced features, but their higher level offerings which are powered by V6s are left with SOHC??? I've never understood this.
I dunno. Maybe Honda will pull rabbits out of their hats and they'll miraculously start getting better mileage and performance than everybody else while also having the lowest emissions, but I'm sorta doubting that. Who thinks the next Accord 4-cylinder will beat the Altima's 0-60 in 7.1s and 38 mpg highway ratings? I don't.
For the compact and mid-size classes, in addition to the reductions in size and weight, transmission efficiency was greatly improved by expanding the ratio range to achieve fuel efficiency improvements of 5%*3 and 10%*3 compared to the conventional CVT and comparable 5ATs, respectively.

Honda needs to get out of the automobile business. Stick to making little motorcycles, boat/lawnmower/generator engines and go karts. Over the past few years they've clearly proven their incompetence and ineptitude of the automobile market.

Honda may not be laughing as much as you think. Sure, they are still making money, much like GM once did, and relying on aging, mediocre products. Their new Civic model is getting awful reviews, and if the rest of their line up follows in Civics footsteps, they are going to be the next GM in another 10 years.
