I don't understand these cars, sub-CUV size? CUV is already only marginally larger than a sedan in utility and cargo space. Unless you want to stuff the rear cargo area until it blocks the window.
It reminds me of the current Subaru outback which is now popular however that vehicle is longer and almost as tall as the CRV. But I don't know what this X1 is.. is there really a need to go smaller than X3?
It just seems like you get SUV styling but maybe not even as much space as the sedan. That's a huge compromise for sitting a bit higher..

Strange - went to Bimmer dealer at lunch to check out the X1. It won't start production until Sept. How are US folks making assessments on the car? At car shows or something?!!

Finally got a chance to look at the X1 at the dealer lot. Exterior wise, it's not really a CUV, but more like a Subaru Forrester wagon. It is not as tall or as imposing as even the X3. I almost think of it as a 4 door 1 series hatchback for the most part. Interior, is....disappointing, even for this price range. I'm accustomed to spartan Teutonic interiors, but the wood looked really plastic and the leather looked especially vinylish (even though it wasn't). Room inside was also very lacking as the it truly is a 4 seat vehicle (i doubt 5 would fit even if you want it to, unless they are little kids). The cargo area was also quite small, especially compared to our RAV4. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to drive though, so I'll have to look at others for that aspect of it. All in all, I was looking for a little peppy CUV and while I'm sure it still has that Bavarian feel and power, the rest was really lacking especially the interior and requisite clearance height I expected. Hopefully, Lexus enters this class and debuts that rumored CX soon, but for now I'll pass on this (unless the wife still wants it).

Ditto.
Driving it isn't going to change any opinions for the better either. We got stuck with one of these for a few days last week. Imagine my wife's excitement when our SA took her keys to her 750 and handed her the keys to the X1...lol.
At least I was able to ensure that my father would never consider one as a replacement for his X6.
