5 Hybrid SuperCars of the Future
Gas-powered speedsters may dominate the track today, but the dawn of the hybrid supercar is fast approaching.
The next generation of supercars will be hybrids. There, it's out there in the open for everyone to see. Equipping a supercar with electric engines and batteries may sound like a bad idea, but it's actually not so bad. These extra electric engines are meant to increase total power and gas mileage, which is something any enthusiast can get behind. If you're interested in seeing what green machines will be tearing up tracks in the future, then continue reading on.
The Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid will have a 550hp 4.6-liter V8 engine paired with 2 electric engines pumping out an additional 230hp. Pricing is expected to be between $650,000 and $700,000, and the vehicle will make its official debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.
The Infiniti Emerg-e is powered by 2 electric motors with a lithium-ion battery pack, 4 inverters and a 3cyl gas engine. All that hybrid goodness equals a total range of 300 miles (hybrid) and 30 miles (electric). Total power is rated at 402hp, good for a 0 to 60 time in less than 4 seconds.
Acura has finally answered the pleas of its fans asking for a new NSX. The newest NSX will be a hybrid with a mid-mounted next-generation VTEC V6 with direct-injection paired with 3 electric motors. Oh, and it looks great in red.
For now, a hybrid Veyron is nothing more than a curiosity among Bugatti's engineers. Still, you've got to wonder if the French automaker has the stones to create the world's fastest production car, convertible and hybrid.
Ferrari's Enzo II supercar is expected to make use of some form of hybrid system, with early indications pointing to the KERS (Kinectic Energy Recovery System) used in previous Ferrari models. If Ferrari is putting a hybrid system into the Enzo II, you know it's here to stay.

Hybrid supercar is very pointless to me. Since they are sold in so limited amount thus the environmental impacts that they caused could be ignored. People who buy supercars wouldn't care how much they spent on gas and how often they visit the gas station. Adding batteries to the car instead of shaving weight is very illogical. I assume these hybrid supercars would all be monsters on straight road but cumbrous on curves. I still prefer the simple way, gas engine mounted behind the sole two seats with rear wheels pushing the car to go forward, that's it.

Doesn't matter how the car mechanically turns out. As long as they throw it in the next pop hit or boy band video, it will be popular. This is the new recipe for eclectic and super car success.

Its amazing that the world "hybrid' is still such a dirty word with people. This is the future that Lexus ushered in with high performance hybrids back in 2005/2006. More and more are seeing the benefits.
Racing already uses KERS technology which is proven to work. I swear maybe they should drop the word "hybrid" and add "E-turbo" and people would stop ****ing *****ing about it all the time.
Some of us see the benefits of hybrid as not just a way to maybe save a couple of MPG but also as a power source. Whats wrong with getting power and more MPG? Every way to increase power has its negatives so lets not just act like hybrids being heavy or more complex is the end of the world.
I said it years ago, for hybrid to possibly get past the "image" people have of it the European brands will need to join in. Porsche has a hybrid Panamera and Cayenne and will have this supercar. BMW, Audi, Benz are all expanding their hybrid lines.
The technology continues to get better!

I agree with 1SICK, the stigma of the word hybrid is still hanging. If I were these car companies and trying to produce an eco sports cars, I'd use the hybrid technology, but NOT focus on the hybrid part of it when it comes to marketing or advertising. That recipe hasn't worked thus far and it would just be simpler and more effective to say our car is this fast or does this the best. Leave the green leaf lingo stuff out when it comes to performance. With these cars, people just want to go fast and don't care how the process makes it happen. Then once the roots are planted with the model, the hybrid part will be noticed, copied, multipled, and the stigma improves.

Do you think hybrid batteries last for 1 year like in cell phones? I found a lot of people here in eastern europe think that, so who knows :-).
