I think going downmarket with a turbo 4 is a really bad decision for the new Z. The Z never had a 4 cylinder, it was originally a inline 6 and then a V6 and it should remain a 6 cylinder sports car. Many find the current 370 ugly and unappealing which is why it does not sell well, a major re design is needed, if they could go back to the lower sleek looks of the 300ZX and give it a better ride while improving performance sales would improve drastically.
sounds about 100% correct to me

Other things they should do for the next Z:

lighten it up
get rid of the ugly vert
bring back targa or T-tops (edit - OR AT LEAST A FREAKIN SUNROOF OPTION)
offer a 2+2 so that dads can justify it as a DD

The Z has never been a mainstream car.

The Z has always been niche product

I get you with the niche products. However I think they went out there with the Z to compete with the Mustang GT and the likes. And they are so far away in terms of price, comfort, power, etc.

I always think of the Z from Nissan is a Competition to the Z4 from BMW. All of those expensive Niche 2 seaters Roadster fail me at first sight....

Non-practical sport car...yeah Niche is nice hehe, not for the majority of the folk though.

The Z is a niche product yes, but I don't think Nissan will keep it around much longer if the sales continues at its current rate. Lets hope they can turn it around with the next gen Z.

Whaaaa? How can you say the Z is a niche product when it's been selling between 30k and 10k per year? It's gone down but it's hugely popular for sure (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_..._calendar_year). I see at least 2-3 350Z's every day on my commute, without exception.

I had a 2003 350Z Track ages ago and totally loved it. The 370Z lightened the car and added power...that's pretty ideal.

From my perspective, any new refresh just needs to have a turbo version that can compete with how the 300zx turbo performed. Modded, those things are still top-tier compared to today's cars.

If the mustang can offer a boosted 4, so can the Z. Heck the cla 45 amg has a boosted 4 with 345hp.

Since nissan and Benz and Renault are sharing all sorts of parts they will figure it out.

A ton of people don't care for outright speed but want the looks. Note how the cayman offers a base and S model (though both 6 cylinders).

I have no issue with an I-4 Z

Maybe you should look up the definition of niche product.

The Z is not the bread and butter for Nissan.

You have listed sales for the 350z. Do know what the sales of the 370z are?

2010: 10,215
2011: 7328

I've considered getting a 370Z at one point, until I sat in one and noticed how horrible the interior was. I drive an IS300 so I wasn't expecting anything grand, but the interior of the 370Z might as well be an econobox. At that point, I knew I couldn't put the money down for it. If they could step up the interior to at least be decent, I'd be all over it as it checks off all the boxes I'd like in a car. Small, nimble, light, and sufficient power except for the decent interior!

They should go back to making something like this!

Yeah back in the 90s a Twin Turbo was about $45k but it was rivaling some exotic cars and it was voted in the top 10 best cars in the world for 6 years (if I remember correctly). It was about the same level as the Skyline GTR so why not bring it back to being a Japanese supercar and put it up there with the new GTR or maybe somewhere in between.... but going 4 cylinder and bringing it down to compete against the FR-S/BRZ? That's what the 240sx was there for, so bring the 240sx back! Nissan really is destroying the Fairlady Z

The major problems with the 370 is that the motor is old, they kept increasing the price moving it higher on the spectrum. When 350s came out in Canada, they were 36ks almost fully loaded, now a base 370 will cost you 46K. The design, the interior and the specs are outdated compared to the competition. Lots of new-comers into the market, and Nissan didn't adjust very well to that.
