Default 2001 Toyota Sequoia R12???? REALLY?

So a couple weeks ago, we were driving in our 2001 Toyota Sequoia and had the A/C on at the coldest setting, and the highest blowing air setting, and it didn't get very cold. It was obvious the A/C needed to be recharged. When we got home, we got the A/C charging can of refrigerant and connector. We turned the vehicle on, put A/C at full blast on coldest temperature, and the connecter, the thing that goes from the can of refrigerant, to the A/C high port, did not fit. It was to big. I know that R12 A/C got ditched back in 94-95 because it ruined the earths ozone, but R12 in a 2001 Toyota Sequoia? Or do luxury Toyota's have their way of making things more complicated.
Thanks

Some car companies switched earlier then 94 but I think everything changed over on 1994 models, your 2001 is way passed that point

First off, the sequoia does not use R12. Second, the connector will not fit into the high port for a reason . The stuff they sell you at the store will generally work on the low pressure side only. They have different size valves so you don't accidentally put things where they shouldn't be. I'd bring it to an expert to save time and hassle..

Question,,, isn't the can refrigerant that you can get from your local store the R12? If it is, and the connector is too big then, IIRC, that Sequioa SHOULD already be on R134. As much as I can remember, you cannot buy R134 unless you are a licensed dealer, and it is not sold at the local auto store. I DO know that you are not able to re-charge the "new" refrigerant like you were able to do with the old without shop assistance. Mixing the 2 is not a good idea b/c it will have catastrophic results on your coling system and the 2 refrigerants are not chemically compatible. Take your Sequoia in and have the system charged properly,, and with the RIGHT coolant.

R12 is Pre-93/94. Post 93/94 is R134a. You can buy R134a off the shelf at walmart. Freeze-12 is a substitute for R12 and I use them in my older vehicles.

That's why it's nice to know a mechanic shop owner, he never charges me for AC refrigerant recharge.

BTW, the AC compressor on my previous 05 Sequoia went out at 105K miles.

R12 was banned for manufacture in the United States and many other countries starting in 1994.

Look under your hood for a sticker that details your AC system. It would be very unusual for you car to have R12...

Honestly dude,,not to be mean, but you seem insistent on a few things. First is not listening to what is being said and offered as proof to an answer to your question, and second you are not reading the ENTIRE response clearly. I pulled up your thread over on Toyo-nation (I am a member there as well), and he did NOT say his 01 was R-12. Please read carefully,,,,
