here in Europe, gas never dropped to 2006 levels since most taxes hiked up the taxes on gas...so while not at its highest, we still pay a lot for gas and nobody went back to big engines.... so esentially in most of European countries, gas is more than $4 per gallon.

Likely the same in Japan.

And besides, thats the reason main updates to Prius are not 10% better MPG, but making it a better car.

Yes for someone that lives in a place where oil is being pumped from their backyard. For the rest of us, we pay upwards for $2.75 to $3.25 a gallon.

i feel like people are now adjusted to current levels despite for instance being $4 in Europe....before when it got to $4.5 there was huge panic... now everyone is happy that it is 25% lower than max from few years back.

Heck, locally our goverment raised fuel taxes to recover part of the loss since the drop :-)

Beneath that lowered hood, Toyota says the Prius' 1.8-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine will produce 96 horsepower and 104 pound-feet of torque.

The electric motor will produce 53 kilowatts (71 hp), and 120 lb-ft.

$4? it's at least $6.50 for a u.s. gallon in uk.

1.11gbp * 1.72 ($) * 3.8 (L->usg)

UK is just crazy.... I meant to write $6 all the time, not $4... ours is cheaper than Euro average at $5.

But yeah, people got used to it and now are fine with it being $5-$6 (depending on their country).

Our goverment rised taxes to raise the price of gas by 15c since they started depnding on it being $8 it briefly hit few years back.

Nobody even complains, it is crazy. Worst part is that diesels are taxed less so it is around 10% extra to buy petrol....

Nice quick glance at what gas is across the country.

http://www.gasbuddy.com/GasPriceMap

Down to the $1.80's is some spots.

I'm paying $2.10 in Mass.

I'm guessing that new parallel gear thingy that replaces the reduction gear will make up for the lost in torque in the electric motor? The MG2's torque has decreased from generation to generation.

Gen 1 - 225 lb-ft (JDM only)
Gen 1.5 - 258 lb-ft (the one we got)
Gen 2 - 295 lb-ft
Gen 3 - 153 lb-ft
Gen 4 - 120 lb-ft

main limiting factor is maximum battery output, not motor output. This is why combined power wasnt >170hp but 136hp... New motor seems to be able to run at higher speeds than old one (so it will be able to run on its own at higher top speeds than before, shutting down the engine during highway as well). Larger motor than needed is used to provide better brake regen, which now they increased despite having smaller motor (it is significantly better in G4).

However, there are rumors that total output is now smaller at 122hp (so 25hp battery output vs 37hp of old Prius) - not sure if thats realistic decrease since battery is exactly the same in power, or maybe they just changed the way they calculate this. They often mention stronger acceleration in PR's but they dont actually mention anywhere it is faster. So thats pretty much only big mystery left.

Another significant news is that max torque from the petrol engine is now 400 rpm lower at 3600 rpm... this means more relaxed acceleration since thats where Prius likes to go for most of acceleration demands (except for full WOT, which then goes to 1000 rpm more or so).
