Alas, back before the 1990s, many Mercedes used to be some of the easiest cars to work on as they were designed for commercial use and to be maintained in 3rd world countries. When I was shopping for an 83-85 300D (W123), I got to know an independent MB mechanic who was in his 70s and still going strong. He said that if his customers would have ever figured out how easy the classic MBs were to work on, he would have been out of business decades ago. He said that in later years, the complexity went way up and the component quality went way down due to cost cutting.
