Default First Drive: 2013 BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe

Long, low, subtly muscled and drenched with desirability, this is a car that BMW ought to have introduced years ago. Mercedes started the four-door "coupe" trend with its CLS way back in 2005, followed by Porsche's Panamera and Audi's A7. There was a hint of something with the Concept CS at the 2007 Shanghai Auto Show, but then nothing.

According to BMW product management man Thomas Giuliani, the reasons were partly the recession, and partly the desire to base the Gran Coupe on the latest 6 Series platform. The new BMW 6 Series coupe and convertible arrived last year, and now we are in Sicily behind the wheel of the Gran Coupe to see if it was worth the wait.

Wow, almost weight as the 7 series. BMW should really starting to keep the weight down.

"twin-turbo, 4.4-liter V-8 with 445 hp, and 480 lb-ft" they bump up the power from the V8TT and finally 8 speed tranny! Cool.

I love the way it looks. I'd rather have the coupe or a 750LI, but this thing looks extremely nice.

This looks pretty good. Rear end is much more balanced than the frumpy butt A7

OMG no foglights

Going to have to see this in person. It just seems like the car the 5 should have looked like, it doesn't push the coupe envelope to me. The CLS looks NOTHING like any other Benz, the A7 has the hatchback to make it stand out. This just seems like another sedan and that front overhang seems rather large. Interior seems completely RX inspired.

Then it seems to weigh the same as the 5. That said I'm sure this is going to sell and Lexus needs to throw its hat in here.

sure it doesn't have LED fogs?

Yup Lexus needs a 4-door coupe. a nice niche model to fit between the GS and LS preferably with a 5.0L V8

I like it. It does a nice job of recapturing the proportions of the classic 6-series... probably the most beautiful BMW of all time. And will it come in matte from the factory?

It seems now BMW does offer matte color as option, and not just matte black. I was at BMW of las vegas 2 weeks ago, and saw one matte brown 550 m sport, a matte charcoal and matte black 7 series. I did check out the matte brown 550 up close, and the paint job is superb.

I was wondering that same thing. I'll have to stop by there this week & check them out.
