Default Rendering Sprinkles MPS / MazdaSpeed Dust Over New MX-5

Barely just revealed, the all-new Mazda MX-5 / Miata has just been given its second PhotoShop makeover, though this one is actually aimed to look like a higher performance production variant, instead of a beefed up street racer on ‘roids.

X-Tomi is the one responsible for the makeover, and it’s his interpretation of what a hotter MX-5, with a unique body kit and wheels would look like. He obviously took some inspiration from current MPS models, hence the current-gen-looking front bumper.

It looks pretty good, and had it not been for the excessively stanced look (it’s just a bit too low to really look factory), we could have passed it as an accurate interpretation of a possible MPS.

Mazda has yet to announce any special versions of the MX-5, though, to be fair, it’s not the kind of car that will be defined by them, like boring econoboxes. For instance, a Ford Focus’ street cred will be upped considerably by the introduction of a crazy RS model, whereas, I think the MX-5 would always be mainly judged based on the more sedate variants.

But enough talk; check out the three-angle rendering posted below!

Couple of nice colors there with that Electric Blue and Lime Green. I hope they both make it into production.

That lime green is pretty hot. Give it some matching bbk and it'll really set her off

Default 2016 Mazda MX-5 Coupe render has a lot of potential

Would rival the BRZ / GT86 / FR-S trio

The recently introduced 2016 Mazda MX-5 has been envisioned as a coupe by Theophilus Chin.

Feedback concerning the new Miata's design has been mostly positive and many are already thinking about the possibility of a coupe version with a fixed metal roof. A derivative equipped with the rumored 200 bhp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine would be a worthy adversary for the Toyota GT 86 / Subaru BRZ / Scion FR-S trio.

Mazda hasn't said anything about a proper coupe version of the new MX-5 but according to a report issued by Automotive News three weeks ago it is believed a hardtop version featuring a fastback profile will come out in the summer of 2016 to further boost the model’s appeal. This means it will be more than just a Power Retractable Hard Top (PRHT) version as the body will receive some modifications as well.

2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata will rock 2.0L SkyActiv engine in US, 1.5L elsewhere

Let the speculation finally end – we know what will power the next-generation 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata, and it's not turbocharged. The US model will get a SkyActiv 2.0-liter engine and six-speed manual, while models in the rest of the world have a 1.5-liter engine, confirming earlier rumors.

Unfortunately, Mazda isn't letting loose how much power either of these mills make just yet. For sake of comparison, the current SkyActiv 2.0 in the Mazda3 produces 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque, and the 1.5-liter in the UK (and elsewhere) has about 99 hp and 110 lb-ft of twist. However, the current Miata produces 167 hp and 140 lb-ft.

But fret not droptop fans. The company's brochure from the 2014 Paris Motor Show confirms, "all available drivetrains have been specially tuned for the all-new MX-5," which at least hints at the possibility of more performance. Also, even if the numbers remain untouched, the new Miata should feel even more sporting on the open road. That's because Mazda says the new model weighs in the neighborhood of 2,200 pounds; with that in mind, the 2016 car would boast around 14.19 pounds per horsepower versus 14.85 lb/hp in the present MX-5. Progress!

Mazda promises to end the anticipation and announce the actual outputs for these mills later.

Told y'all so.

With the success of the MX-5 Cup series, it was only a matter of time until Mazda unveiled a new Cup car based on the fourth-generation MX-5.

The 2015 Mazda MX-5 was revealed at the 2014 Paris motor show, and a team of What Car? readers have had a chance to take a look around the new roadster.

The only downsize about this new ND is, the car is going to have less than 180hp. Shame Mazda engineering. At least it weights 2300lb.

Too much concern, IMO, with how many horses are under the hood. Power is not really the main issue with the Miata...never has been. That's one reason why it was such a huge success even with the original 116 HP engine 25 years ago. That's also a big reason any we have not seen more MazdaSpeed versions. This car is all about as pure an open-air, 2-seater driving experience on a winding road as one can get. It was never meant for a drag strip.

I understand what you're saying, but after a decade, they should give Miata an incremental improvement on every aspect like Chevy gave it to C7. At least Miata is still an affordable open top.

MSM was not a sale success because it came in the wrong time. At the time, NB was not even able to move out of the lot and Miata sales as a whole was already a failure. I'm glad that Mazda still keeps making the car even Miata hasn't been doing great in the last 15 years.
