Today's Miata does have significantly more power than the original model....but also significantly more weight, though it is still a very light and agile car by today's standards.

At least Miata is still an affordable open top.
Whoever designed the Miata's simple one-handed, flip-open top was nothing short of a true genius. I can do it myself in 2-3 seconds with my right arm while sitting in the drivers' seat. (I often show that off to people at the D.C. Auto Show even though I'm not a Mazda show-employee). They, too, are amazed to see how quick and simple the top is to both raise or lower...especially compared to its former Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky competitors, where it was essentially a 5 or 6-step operation, having to get out of the car.

MSM was not a sale success because it came in the wrong time.
Well, in one sense, the MSM was a success just like any other version of the Miata. Turbo power, though probably unneeded, certainly didn't hurt the car. But the point I was making before was that speed and power is not the Miata's main function.....canyon-carving on a twisty road is, preferably on a mild sunny day. .

That coupe version, on the top half, reminds me of an Fd rx-7. I like.

Default US-spec Mazda MX-5 premiered at Los Angeles Auto Show

To be available only with a 2.0-liter petrol engine

Mazda has revealed the US-spec MX-5 roadster during the Los Angeles Auto Show.

The Japanese company says the model “delivers true driving pleasure and is an irreplaceable partner for the people on board” and that it has "steadily evolved in a way that is only possible thanks to an unchanging passion shared between Mazda and countless MX-5 owners and fans around the world.”

The big news for the US-spec version is that it will be available only with a 2.0-liter SKYACTIV-G four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine of undisclosed output. It will be mated to a Skyactiv-MT six-speed manual transmission. The smaller 1.5-liter unit won’t be offered in North America.

The US-spec variant is also equipped with a double wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension, electric power assisted steering, ventilated disc brakes on the front axle and 195/50 R16 or 205/45 R17 tires.

As previously reported, the roadster is 105mm shorter, 20mm lower and 10mm wider than its predecessor. Based on a new rear-wheel-drive architecture, the MX-5 is around 100kg (220lbs) lighter than the outgoing model.

Sure hate that guppy lookin' front end.

I drove a Toyota MR2 Spyder for 14 years and loved the lightweight body and crisp handling. Too bad it didn't take off like the Miata. Of course, only 5,000 annually were imported into the US.

Default BBR Teases 2016 Mazda MX-5 Tuning Program, Promises at Least 200HP

So, it begins; British tuner BBR is working on a raft of visual and performance upgrades for Mazda's all-new 2016 MX-5 roadster.

"A program of detailed performance enhancements has already commenced at our Brackley base, thanks to our investment in a 2.0-litre Skyactiv powered Mazda 3" explained BBR’s Neil Mckay.

"Our objective with the all-new MX-5 is to achieve the same 200bhp output that we can easily enjoy with simple bolt-on components on the current 2.0-litre NC model, before building on further power upgrades using forced induction," he added.

McKay said that BBR has already viewed a pre-production version of the roadster and is exploring its options for a series of visual enhancements.

"Our current customer base requests subtle bodywork alterations, so we are also working hard on these over the coming months," he said. "We will be revealing more in spring 2015."

For now, BBR shared a teaser rendering of a silver 2016 MX-5 fitted with a few upgrade parts such as a front apron, side skirts, boot lid spoiler, and bigger exhaust tips.

200 PS? What a joke, that is what a GT86 gets stock. Now Mazda build a 250-300 PS MX-5 Coupé MPS.

Do you realize ND MX-5 will have more torque and weight 400-500lb less than GT86? Stock ND will beat 86 0-60. You can use Mazda 3 2.0 engine spec as reference, there is no torque dip in SA 2.0 like FA20 D4S. Stock will come around 170hp and 165lb ft/tq and 2350lb. Just enough to annihilate 86 on the track or backroad. The one car that needs more power to compensate with heavy weight is 86, not ND.

I like it, though the headlights are very small compared to the big open grill, plus they could have made that fuel door smaller, look at the RX fuel door.

Default First 2016 Mazda MX-5 Video Review Hits the Web

We know you've been waiting for it, so here's the first online video review of the highly-anticipated 2016 Mazda MX-5 roadster.

More reviews are expected during the day as Mazda's embargo just ended, but for now, we have an English test from Autoexpress and a Dutch from Autovisie.

Before we let you watch the two videos, let us say that the car tested comes with the 1.5-liter four-cylinder Skyactive G direct-injection engine rated at 131PS (129hp) at 7,000 rpm and 150Nm (110.6 lb-ft) of peak torque at 4,800 rpm, paired to a Skyactive MT 6-speed manual gearbox.

In this configuration, the Japanese roadster tips the scales at a rather lightweight 1,000kg or 2,205 pounds.

A 2.0-liter inline-four Skyactive G engine delivering 155-horses and hooked up to a six-speed stick shift will also be available in Europe as well as North America where it will be the only unit offered at launch.

Matt Prior drives the all-new fourth-generation Mazda MX-5. Will it be as big a success as the original?

Interesting that they aren't offering an 18" wheel option on the new Miata. 195/50/R16 tire size that is stock seems rather tame compared to some of the wheel/tire combos out there on sports cars now days.

Of course I understand their whole reasoning behind the smaller wheels, less unsprung weight. Just saying that in stock trim the wheels look rather tiny in those huge wheel openings, and the whole car could stand to be lowered about an inch, as there a huge gap between the top of the tire and the fender.

Default Mazda says they are considering turbo or MPS version of new MX-5

MX-5 to have a ten-year lifespan

A Mazda representative has announced the company is taking into consideration building a turbocharged or MPS version of the new MX-5.
Mazda took their sweet time to release partial performance specifications of the highly desirable 2016 MX-5 but now we know the SKYACTIV-G 1.5-liter gasoline engine produces 129 bhp (131 PS / 96 kW) and 150 Nm (110 lb-ft) of torque. They still haven't said a word about the bigger SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter engine but the latest gossip refers to a 155 bhp (157 PS / 115 kW) and 200 Nm (148 lb-ft) output.

If this isn't enough, you might want to know that Mazda's head of global public relations, Kudo Hidetoshi, told Motoring they are analyzing the prospects of introducing a turbocharged or MPS version of the new Miata. He went on to specify the fourth generation (ND) will probably have a ten-year lifespan which should give them enough time to come out will many derivatives.

The hotter MX-5 could adopt a larger SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter engine but Hidetoshi said they are prioritizing the use of a turbocharged motor to maintain the lightweight construction with a 50:50 distribution.
