GM closing Volt plant for 5 weeks, fires 1300 workers!
The Hamtramck plant will be shut for 5 weeks, from March 19th to April 23rd. GM currently has a 154 day supply of the car. 1,300 workers will be temporarily laid off. Despite this, the official line remains a cheery “Volt sales have doubled” from last month, just like the Ford Focus is up 115 percent year-over-year. Of course, this is just a minor story which we’re promoting due to our anti-GM bias – excuse us while we report on car crashes involving “sexual anus plugs“.
The real reason for CNN story comes out today... GM is firing 1300 workers in Volt plant and shutting it down for more than a month.
Wow.
So... what happens now? Will Prius start accelerating away again? Maybe exploding?

GM laying off 1300 due to low Volt sales byJoel Gehrke Commentary Staff Writer
General Motors Co. announced the temporary suspension of Chevrolet Volt production and the layoffs of 1300 employees, as the company is cutting Volt manufacturing to meet lower-than-expected demand for the electric cars.
"Even with sales up in February over January, we are still seeking to align our production with demand," GM spokesman Chris Lee said. The car company had hoped to sell 45,000 Chevy Volts in America this year, according to the Detrot News, but has only sold about 1,626 over the first two months of 2012.
"GM blamed the lack of sales in January on “exaggerated” media reports and the federal government's investigation into Volt batteries catching fire, which officially began in November and ended Jan. 21," the Ann Arbor (Mich.) News reported.
The laid-off employees will be rehired April 23rd, when GM resumes production of the Volt.

Layoffs are common in the auto industry. So are firings (although the unions make it tougher). They're just different animals. Yeah unless the price comes down considerably the Volt has a rocky road ahead of it.

Not surprised, the Volt is over-priced and has quite a bit of plastic.
Toyota sold more Prius(s) in 10 weeks than Chevrolet sold Volt(s) in 2011.
They need to make the Volt more affordable. And, consumers need to see more data on how they will hold up. They haven't been around long enough.

IIRC the way the UAW contract used to be written, workers on short-term layoff received 95% of their base pay plus full benefits. When working, most assembly plant workers earned an extra 30+% over their base due to overtime. Not sure what the contracts read now.

I just love how they are actually blaming the media for negative reports resulting in low sales - as if demand for the Volt were elastic or something.
Wasn't the Pres just asking for more Volt tax credits? When an additional 6% subsidy is needed just to try to make a car economically feasible - on top of the nearly 20% existing subsidy, to boot - I don't think anyone can make that type of assertion about responsiveness in demand with a straight face.

So let me get this straight, the media tries to kill Toyota sales with their witch hunt reporting, and fails. But the same media successfully kills off the Volt? Interesting.

Here in the San Francisco Bay Area I see a lot more Nissan Leafs than I see Volts. In fact, on any given day I see at least 2 or 3 on the roads, not including my colleague's at work.
I think most people are smart enough to analyze the crap about the Volt fire. I think in the end, price is the killer.
