2014 Cadillac CTS grows to compete with BMW 5 Series

The Cadillac CTS has always been a bit of a anomaly in the luxury segment, spanning the space between the entry-level BMW 3 Series/Mercedes-Benz C-Class/Audi A4 and mid-size 5 Series/E-Class/A6. But with the introduction of the 2013 Cadillac ATS, the CTS has room to grow, and based on these first set of spy shots, it's doing just that.

Based off a stretched version of the Alpha platform that's underpinning its smaller sibling, the 2014 CTS' wheelbase is likely to grow a few inches, affording rear seat passengers up to 40 inches of leg room. While the front overhangs are still short and will continue on with Cadillac's Art and Science design motif with angular headlamps that stretch up the front fenders, the rear will likely extend a bit further back, maximizing trunk room in the process.

It's expected that the base engine will continue to be a V6, but churning out something in the neighborhood of 350 horsepower, possibly through the use of forced induction. The current six-speed automatic will likely be swapped in favor of a new eight-speed auto 'box to keep up with the rest of the luxury set.

If we had to place bets, we'd put our money on the 2014 CTS debuting at the Detroit Auto Show next year, with sales beginning late in 2013.

yup just as we thought. CTS moving on up. More lux more price

Well, now they have ATS, so they need to move CTS up, good move.

I never understood which category the CTS was originally supposed to fall in to. I was always under the impression that when Cadillac released that car, it was a 3-series competitor, as well as the A4 and Lexus IS. The current model has been compared with the 5 series for a while now, and now it seems like it's official.

Like Mike mentioned:
Right, the ES/G37/TL/CTS have always been "tweeners" cars bigger than the others in class but priced and aimed for the smaller class. Part of their "value" proposition or "trickery" is you get a larger sized car for the price of a 3/IS/C/A4.
The CTS straddled both small and midsize segments till now

Frankly, I'm getting tired of Cadillac always trying to play catch up. If they want the CTS to fit one car class higher, they should just invent an all new model that fits. The CTS was originally made to compete with the 3-series, C Class, and A4. To abandon classes, switch around, and take 10 years to do so, is a big freakin waste of time, resources and adds confusion to the buying public.
Cadillac, get you act together once and for all... it's been since the 90's and you are still spinning your wheels trying to fit in.

They now have the ATS to compete with the IS, 3, C, and G. (talk about alphabet soup!).

Their real problem is that they still have nothing to compete with the LS, 7, S, etc. XTS is a joke compared to those cars.

The current CTS-V had power figures that were aiming for the M5. Looks like the next gen model will continue that same agenda.

Cadillac has what it takes to compete against the M5 once again

#fail - the CTS has always been a midsize, but because it was the smallest caddi the media compares it to a 3 series when it's been as big as a 5/E/GS anyway, although the newest 5 got bigger again, so now the CTS is getting bigger.

this article is really no news.

Its always been priced like an entry level car though. The TL/G37/CTS/ES are examples of mid size cars priced like entry level cars. That is a huge reason for their success, you get a larger car for the price of the smaller 3/IS/C etc.

The CTS starts at 36k....that is less than the ES 350 base price

The challenge will see how will sales do when they price the car higher to go head to head with the mid-size class. Will CTS buyers balk and just buy the ATS?

if that happens i expect cadillac and its dealers will be very happy. it's better than them going to another brand.

for all my annoyance at gm's bailout, i think the cts is a GREAT car.
