Toyota Yaris Hybrid
New Toyota Yaris Hybrid is revealed ahead of Geneva Motor Show launch in March

Toyota has redesigned its Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain to make it more compact to fit within the Yaris frame. It uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine mated to a redesigned electric motor and compact battery pack which is 20 per cent lighter than the system in the Auris. This system means the Yaris Hybrid produces 98bhp, and power gets to the front wheels via Toyota's e-CVT automatic gearbox.

The batteries are now small enough to fit under the rear seats, so unlike the Auris, the 286-litre boot in the Yaris Hybrid is the same as that found in conventional petrol and diesel versions.

Toyota has yet to confirm emissions or economy figures, or even how far you can drive the Yaris Hybrid in electric-only mode, but you can expect CO2 figures which are among the best in the supermini class.

We'll have more details on the Yaris Hybrid closer to its launch in March, although Toyota has confirmed that it will go on sale in the UK in the summer.

Looks real good inside and out. It has the same powertrain as the Prius C.

Does the Yaris really need a hybrid drivetrain? Like really, how much more mpg do you want out of it? LOL

I'd like to know if this is destined for the US. It may be a bit crowded with the Prius C covering a very similar segment. Two 5 door hatchbacks with little size difference. That said, I'd definitely like to see it here. The more the merrier.

i doubt the US... Here is the difference - in Europe, Yaris is best selling Toyota.
In US, B class size hatchback sell a lot less... so it doesnt make sense to offer them both.

On the other hand, there is actually size difference between the two so in Europe, where they sell up to 250k Yarii per year, it makes a lot sense... They will be like Camry Hybrid and Prius.

this is new face of Toyota Europe cars, and I think it looks great... a lot more agressive than normal Yaris.

Thought about the same overlap with the Prius C.

New widemouth grille is more fallout from the trend Audi started in 2005. Ford is going the same route, as well as others. Ten years from now when everyone has huge, gaping grilles, someone needs to remember the 2005 Audi A6 and all the heat it got.

1.33l ZR series engine with CVT and start/stop gets 5.1l average, this gets 3.5l, same hp. So quite an difference, double the mpg.

I always wondered why Toyota hasn't done this sooner...take an existing great MPG car and add the Hybrid Synergy Drive....it should kill the Prius MPG.
