I'm no defender of insurance fraud, but good luck to the prosecution in this case......it can be very difficult to prove intent on the part of the car owner. Besides, who in their right mind would deliberately drive a car into a canal in Florida, where many of the canals are filled with alligators and poisonous water-snakes?.........and not to mention Zika-mosquitoes.

You'd be surprise to know auto insurance fraud is huge in SFL; especially the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area and has been so for decades. This explains why our rates are extremely high.

That, and, of course, the constant threat of storm damage in that region.

Apparently caught on camera----I still don't get how (I assume) reasonably intelligent people don't realize they are basically under surveillance 24/7.

If it were me the first thing I'd be doing is looking for cameras (not that I'd ever do anything like this).

The lack of smarts....it reminds me of all these people (some extremely rich doctors, execs, etc.) on Dateline/48hrs/2020 who waive their 5th amendment right and talk to cops without lawyers when they get them in the interrogation rooms.

constant? might want to check into that. matthew didn't technically make landfall in FL (mostly beach erosion and damage to weaker/older homes/buildings) and the last one that did was over a decade ago. hardly 'constant' threat of storm damage to cars. and of course we do have garages here, lol.

Insurance is going to be pricey in any large metro area like South Florida, not only bc of scams and such, but the sheer value of the vehicles on the road ($100k cars everywhere let alone the Rollers and Lambos) plays a big factor as well. And SoFla is definitely all about high end cars.

Los Angeles was "worse" even than Miami. We pay a good amount less than half now for two cars, boat insurance and renters than we paid for just our two cars out there.

I loved living there but everything was just a grossly overpriced hassle and PITA.

I thought it was determined that the culprit was caught on camera.

Well, that was partly my point....anyone that would do something like that, camera or not, into one of FL's alligator/snake-infested canals probably has a couple of screws loose.
