I'm with you on this one Mike....
I am thinking its insulting more than ever to call them coupes. I guess the 2/3GS was a 4 door coupe, so is the Jaguar XJ and XF too. They simply are another sedan built on an existing platform with a new name. Its brilliant from a marketing perspective but this BMW ain't even trying to act like a coupe. It looks like a 5 series with a lower windshield and roof. Its another same design, different name like the A7. At least the CLS doesn't resemble ANY Mercedes, this generation or last.
To the Germans credit they have invented a new niche that is doing great things for their image and people seem to love it. For those that still want 4 doors but don't want a plebeian 5/E/A6 they have the 6/CLS/A7 option. Utterly brilliant no way you slice it.
The Japanese brands clearly are moving like molasses. Lexus should be in this segment as soon as the CLS landed. These are huge image boost cars.
I can't blame BMW one iota for jumping in this profitable pond.

call it what ever u want too, but this niche is hot....not sure about the sonata but the CC, 6GC, CLS, A7, Rapide and Panamera looks gorgeous, some even better then there 2 door or sedan counter parts, JMO

The $76,895 (including $895 Destination and Handling Charge) TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder powered 640i Gran Coupe is the initial model of the range, and arrives early this summer. Later in the summer, the TwinPower Turbo V-8 powered 2013 BMW 650i Gran Coupe and the all-wheel drive 2013 BMW 650i xDrive Gran Coupe will join the line. Yeah its not cheap but still a brilliant move. 4 door coupes are all the rage and add sizable profit since the main components exist. If this is a better drive than the 5 series it may keep some buyers in the brand that want a BMW that drives sportier than a Lexus 
I can't believe not one Japanese brand has jumped in this pool yet. Its cool with people, it adds tons to image (in a good way) and they sell.
