That is why I said sell my current NSX and add that money to the $35K for an 05. I already own a $35K NSX, so might as well trade up.

And, believe me, I look at a LOT of new cars every year (some of them, of course, for CL-requested auto-reviews), so I know what's out there on the market. There are lots worse ways than Subaru, IMO, that you can blow an automotive-dollar.

Now, for a used-car, that may be a different story. Several posters here have mentioned a used Lexus LS, for 30-35K, and I tend to agree with them.
Didn't mean for it to come out as if I was poking fun at you. It's just usually in these sorts of threads you never really see someone choosing an Outback, but of course it's all in the person's best interest.

My parents got their 06 S600 brand new and they haven't had a single problem with it and they're at 60k miles.

the w220 is a car to be avoided at all cost imho. their prices tank so bad for a reason. you can get a very nice s600 for very low price. the car simply falls apart left and right, tons of problems and there is really no "solution". this is especially true for earlier years. later years things seemed to get better, but still people just stay away. and just like all other germans, it's hit and miss (miss > hit though). that's why i avoided it completely and was able to land on a w221.

There's 3 cars most of my mechanic friends agree they love to fix:

Older Benz's (especially the W220 and anything AMG), The PT Cruiser, and anything made by Land Rover.

The Benz's and the Land Rover's are apparently because parts are expensive and many parts aren't as easy to change out...so they make good money on both parts and labor.

The PT Cruiser is mainly because of how hard it is to get to certain areas of the car. One of them charged $1400 for a timing belt job and customer happily paid because it was still cheaper then the dealerships. 0_0

Yeah, i was kinda referring to the license plate and the fact that 2008 LS460's are at least $45000 more expensive over here than in the states. I'll ask the OP to redo his wikipedia search, ensure it's actually an 08 before posting again..

I wish -- just a fan. Impressed that you recognize it...I have to put the W in there or else people think I'm a Parrot Head.

Although it only seats five, a prius would also be nice as well.
I too was looking at the 4runner before I posed the question as the OP. I couldn't believe how much the used ones cost...they seem to really retain their value well and the depreciation curve gets very, very flat the older the car gets. I have a feeling most people think they need an SUV when they'd really be happier with a crossover like the Lexus RX for example. It seems like there aren't very many trucklike SUVs left these days that can really handle things like offroading, and the 4runner seems to one of the few left. A nice blend of capability and luxury.

I was looking at these exact options (along with the LS 460). I know the 430 is very popular but I just don't like the exterior styling because it is a little too dated for me on the backend (I'm a younger guy) and they've held their value so well that it isn't much more to grab an LS 460. I really like the W220 S600 and its funny to think of driving what was a $100,000 car, but I just read too much about liability problems, even in the MB forums they say maintenance costs are out of control. It would be awesome to have an s600, but not with $500 oil changes and $2,000 pump problems.

I thought the IS-F would be fun, and my dream car growing up was always an M3 so it would be like getting an M but without as many reliability problems, however it seemed like maintenance costs are high on them not because of reliability problems but just because of normal wear and tear a high performance car endures -- frequent tire changes, brake pad changes, etc.
