Its official debut is just days away but a leaked image has revealed Maserati’s forthcoming SUV concept. The Maserati four-by-four will debut on September 13 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
Maserati confirmed plans for a luxury SUV earlier this year, but failed to release any images of the Porsche Cayenne rival. However, a Frankfurt Motor Show guide book has given us our first look at the U.S.-made utility vehicle.
The Maserati SUV will be based on the Jeep Grand Cherokee but, as reported earlier, the platform mates won’t share any common sheet metal. Judging by the leaked image, this will indeed be the case.
The SUV sports Maserati’s signature front grille, although its headlights are larger and more expressive than we’ve come to expect from the Italian automaker. The SUV’s overall shape looks to be more coupe-like than the Grand Cherokee, mimicking the shape of the BMW X6.
As expected, the Maserati SUV will receive its motivations from a 450 horsepower version of the company’s 4.7L V8. A 3.0L V6 diesel engine with over 300 horsepower will also be on offer in the European market. Both mills are expected to be mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Despite its Italian nameplate, the yet-to-be-named Maserati SUV will be built at Chrysler’s Jefferson North assembly plant. Sales of the luxury SUV are slated to commence in 2013.
