Default ***Official Recall Thread***

Thought I'd make a thread dedicated to Recalls. Large, small, interesting, mysterious and downright funny!!! Also including IIHS and NHTSA Investigations

Please post new/current Recalls!!

Here's some recent ones:

Chrysler recalls 300,000 minivans for airbags that could spontaneously deploy

The caption "In your FACE" keeps running through my head lol

Chrysler has announced that it is recalling 299,178 minivans for a potentially dangerous HVAC fault. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, certain 2008 Chrysler Grand Voyager, Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan models could have air conditioning systems that leak condensation onto the occupant restraint control module. This can cause the airbag light to illuminate and may eventually lead to the accidental deployment of the supplemental restraints. The vehicles in question were manufactured between June 24, 2007 and July 30, 2008, and NHTSA warns that an accidental airbag deployment could cause occupant injury or lead to a serious accident.

Chrysler dealers will replace the occupant restraint control module free of charge once the recall begins this month. At this point it's unclear whether any work will be done to the HVAC system to prevent condensation from causing the same issue in the future.

Ford recalling 1.1 million F-Series pickups over gas tank straps

Back in May of 2011, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that it was expanding its investigation of 2.7 million Ford F-150 models for corroding gas tank straps. Less than three months later, the recall is on like Donkey Kong, though Bloomberg reports that Ford has announced that the actual number is closer to 1.1 million. Further, the 1997 through 2004 F-150 models will be joined by 1997 to 1999 F-250 trucks and 2002 and 2003 Lincoln Blackwood models.

Ford says the gas tank straps are being recalled due to possible corrosion from road salt and other ice-melting chemicals. And since elements like salt are the reason for the corrosion, Ford is only recalling the trucks in the 21 cold weather states and the District of Columbia.

Ford spokesperson Wesley Sherwood adds that the trucks involved in the recall are of the "older, higher-mileage" variety, adding that the straps can corrode after the trucks spend a lot of time in high-corrosion environments.

While the recall is official as of August 1, Ford reportedly won't begin sending out recall notices until mid-September. When the notices arrive, owners of the affected vehicles can bring their truck to the nearest Ford or Lincoln dealer for a free-of-charge repair. if the straps aren't available when the customer enters the dealership, Ford will install a cable support under the fuel tank strap as a short-term fix.

Any time an automaker announces a recall of over 1 million units, it's a big deal. And this is the second seven-digit recall of Ford truck in the last few months. Since these are older trucks, most truck buyers will likely turn the other cheek, but we're guessing Ford is hoping this is the last big truck recall for a long while.

Nissan recalling 20,000 new Altima sedans over suspension bolt

The recall bug has struck Nissan, but fortunately it appears the Japanese automaker caught the problem early on. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says on its website that Nissan is recalling 20,000 copies of the 2011 and 2012 Altima built between April 25 and June 10 due to a suspension bolt that may not have been torqued to specification.

If the transverse link bolt isn't properly tightened, it may loosen while the vehicle is being driven, which could lead to a rattling noise and vibration. A vibrating vehicle is usually little more than an annoyance, but if the bolt comes out completely, NHTSA says the driver could have trouble controlling their Altima.

To fix the problem, owners of the affected vehicles will need to take their vehicle to a Nissan dealer for a free-of-charge repair. A technician will replace the transverse link bolts and nuts and tighten them to the proper torque specification.

Chrysler recalling nearly 243,000 Ram pickups over tie rod concern

Chrysler has announced a recall that affects 242,780 Ram pickups manufactured between 2003 and 2011. This includes the 2008 Ram 1500, and 2003-2011 Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty trucks.

According to the official recall statement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these trucks may have a defective left tie rod ball stud that can fracture during low-speed parking maneuvers. According to NHTSA:

This condition could result in the potential loss of directional stability in the left hand front wheel, increasing the risk of a crash.

To remedy this potential problem, dealers will inspect the tie rod ends and perform an alignment if necessary.

2011 BMW X3 recalled over power steering issues

The 2011 BMW X3 has only been on sale for a few months now, but it already faces a recall over a potentially serious problem. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a control module in the crossover's electric power steering system may malfunction, resulting in a loss of power steering.

This recall only affects X3s built between April 27, 2011 and June 8, 2011 – 50 vehicles in total – and owners will be notified within the coming weeks. BMW dealers will repair the control module free of charge, ensuring that the X3's steering never goes berserk while out on the road.

Lada has never had a recall... Neither did Gaz, Zaz, or any other Soviet maker. They must've made the most reliable cars ever.

Default Honda recalling 2.26M vehicles in U.S., China over gearbox fears

Honda recalling 2.26M vehicles in U.S., China over gearbox fears

Honda has announced a voluntary recall on 2.26 million vehicles around the world, 1.5 million of which reside in the United States. This recall concerns the automatic transmission software of the 2005-2010 Accord (four-cylinder), 2007-2010 CR-V and 2005-2008 Element, where the transmission's secondary shaft can be damaged if quick shifts are made between Reverse, Neutral and Drive (as a driver might do when trying to rock free a stuck vehicle from snow or mud).

The automaker states that, in this scenario, a secondary shaft can be damaged and a bearing can break, causing the engine to stall or lead to difficulty with putting the vehicle in Park. Honda's remedy includes an update to the transmission's control module software, easing the transition between gears to reduce the possibility of damage.

Honda has confirmed that no injuries or deaths have been reported because of the gearbox malady. Owners will be able to take their cars to dealers and have the recall work done free of charge, and Honda will begin its owner notification process starting on August 31.

Not recalls, but may become one day. Interesting nonetheless

2011 Volkswagen Jetta TDI being investigated over potential fuel leak

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is launching an investigation concerning 40,000 2011 Volkswagen Jetta TDI models. This is the result of NHTSA receiving seven complaints from Jetta TDI owners citing leakage from the fuel line to the fuel injector. If an official recall is issued, both the 2011 Jetta TDI sedan and SportWagen will be affected.

NHTSA's report states that the common rail fuel system in the Jetta TDI operates at extremely high fuel injection pressure – up to 26,000 psi – and that the seven complaints involved vehicles that had between 2,470 to 7,764 miles on the odometer

Additionally, NHTSA says that it has received a similar complaint regarding a Volkswagen Golf TDI, which uses the same 2.0-liter diesel engine as the Jetta. The investigation was officially opened on August 2.

Ford Mustang under investigation for transmission issues

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation surrounding transmission issues in the 2011-12 Ford Mustang. NHTSA has received 32 complaints citing inability to shift into gears at speed. Around 26,000 Mustangs are being investigated because of these claims.

Regarding the 32 complaints, NHTSA filed this in its report:

Some reports allege incidents occurred while merging into high speed traffic and others allege that incidents occurred while turning left across oncoming traffic. Some complainants allege that the erratic shifting behavior almost caused a collision with adjacent vehicles.

The official investigation was opened on August 3rd. According to The Detroit News, a spokesperson from Ford Motor Company said that the automaker will fully cooperate with NHTSA regarding this matter.

Ford has used that "older, higher mileage" excuse when one of their crappers from the pre-Mullaly era like the Windstar and old F-150s have recalls or problems. It's gonna be years before the roads are purged from the crap the Domestics built before the last 2-3 years, and in Chrysler's case and for some GMs, what they build now.

Default BMW 7 Series under investigation for roll-away issue

BMW 7 Series under investigation for roll-away issue

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has begun an investigation (not a recall) into BMW 7 Series models made from 2002 through 2008. The reason? A 2006 BMW 7 Series rolled away when it was parked, and NHTSA wants to make sure this was an isolated incident. After all, we don't want to see more unintended activity involving any of the 120,000 units sold between that time period.

We're not going to worry just yet, however, as the lone incident resulted in no injuries or an accident. Still, there are a few other reports of folks experiencing a randomly rolling 7 Series, and NHTSA is examining the electronic transmission shifter. The unit is designed to place the vehicle in park when the engine is turned off.

Once we hear more with regards to the mysterious case of the roving 7 Series, we'll let you know.

All that crap is here in the south, I can't believe how many older, high mileage Ford, GM and Chrysler products are on the road, and I learned that you don't need to fix that oil leak, let it pour out onto the parking lot, street or whatever, not gonna slow that POS down with 200k on it

Default 2011-12 Audi R8 Spyder recalled for fuel leak

2011-12 Audi R8 Spyder recalled for fuel leak

Not even supercars are safe from recalls. Audi is recalling certain R8 Spyders for a potential fuel leak, caused by the fuel supply line rubbing against the heat shield in the engine compartment. According to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, this effects droptop R8s built between May 18, 2010 and June 22, 2011.

We don't need to tell you why a fuel leak is a potential disaster. Anyone who dropped the cash for an R8 Spyder surely will not want to see it go up in flames.

The official recall is expected to begin on August 22, and owners will be able to have their cars inspected and repaired free of charge.

Default 2012 Buick LaCrosse recalled over improperly calibrated ESC

2012 Buick LaCrosse recalled over improperly calibrated ESC

The very first 2012 Buick LaCrosse models began rolling off the line in June, but a new recall notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will have these cars going right back to the dealerships from which they came. NHTSA states that 4,077 LaCrosse sedans are affected by this recall, covering vehicles built between June 9 and July 2 of this year.

NHTSA states that these 2012 LaCrosse models "fail to conform to the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 126," concerning electronic stability control systems. The recall notice adds:

The StabiliTrak system has an incorrect calibration that may cause the system to not properly detect if a sensor were to malfunction, and the warning light indicating that the system is not operating would not illuminate, as required in the safety standard.

If an ESC sensor malfunctions, it could cause the system to falsely activate, resulting in sudden changes to the LaCrosse's driving dynamics. This could result in loss of driver control, and ultimately, a crash.

The safety recall is expected to kick off sometime later this month, where Buick dealers will reprogram the electronic brake control free of charge.

Default 2012 Chevrolet Impala recalled for improper routing of power steering hose

2012 Chevrolet Impala recalled for improper routing of power steering hose

General Motors has announced that it is recalling certain Model Year 2012 Chevrolet Impalas for improper routing of the vehicle's upper power steering hose, which could lead to melting of the hose due to its close proximity to the catalytic converter. The safety concern is that the melted hose may drip power steering fluid onto the vehicle's catalytic converter, resulting in a blaze.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that 10,344 Model Year 2012 Chevy Impalas manufactured between April 19, 2011 and July 29, 2011 could potentially be affected by this recall. GM dealers will inspect vehicles to ensure the upper power steering hose is routed correctly and make any repairs or alterations free of charge.

2012 Nissan Altima, NV van recalled for air bag control unit issue

For a two-week period this year, Nissan apparently incorrectly assembled the air bag control unit in both the 2012 Altima and the 2012 NV work van. That's the news from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which today announced a small recall of the two vehicles – the potential number of vehicles affected is just 54.

The faulty ACU installations were done between June 15 and 21, 2011 for the Altima, and June 23 and 28 for the NV. NHTSA says that the unit "will not operate as designed and this issue may cause the air bags not to inflate in a crash ... This could increase the risk of injury." Um, yes. Yes it could.

Still, given some of the major Altima recalls Nissan has had to deal with in the past – hundreds of thousands in 2007 and 20,000 just a few weeks ago – this latest problem should be small potatoes to fix. Nissan will replace the ACUs free of charge starting on or around August 22

Mazda CX-9 being investigated for brake fluid leak

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation (read: not a recall) into the braking effectiveness of 2008 Mazda CX-9 crossovers. The reason? NHTSA received data from Mazda indicating a "high number" of warranty claims and reports related to the vehicle's braking system.

The NHTSA probe will examine reports that leaking brake fluid could degrade braking effectiveness of approximately 37,000 Mazda CX-9s. NHTSA says no injuries or accidents have been reported in connection with the CX-9's braking system, but the Agency has released this statement: "When brake fluid leaks into the vacuum booster the driver can experience reduced brake effectiveness which can result in extended stopping distance."

This preliminary investigation by NHTSA is the first step in a process that could lead to a recall if regulators determine the safety-related issue needs to be addressed by the automaker.

Maserati Quattroporte and GranTurismo recalled over tie-rods

Maserati is recalling Quattroporte and GranTurismo vehicles from the 2009 model year over poorly machined rear tie-rods that could fail. The loss of rear tie-rods is not something to be taken lightly – nothing like rear suspension destruction to soil your luxurious driving experience. The recall should begin next month and affects a total of 763 cars.

The affected cars were built between July and September of 2008. Maserati dealers will replace the shoddy tie-rods, install a tie-rod kit and do a wheel alignment. Of course, the repairs won't cost Maserati owners a cent.
