Default Chrysler recalls small number of 2013-2014 cars and trucks over engine debris

Chrysler recalls small number of 2013-2014 cars and trucks over engine debris

Chrysler is recalling a small number cars over issues with their 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines. The recall, which affects 522 examples of its 2013 Dodge Avenger and Chrysler 200 models, as well as 2014 Jeep Compass and Patriot CUVs has to do with potential debris in the balance shaft bearings.

The abrasive stuff can cause the oil pressure to drop, which could lead to the engine stalling or outright failure. This situation could at best leave drivers stranded and at worst lead to a crash.

Default Acura recalling nearly 20k new MDX crossovers over AWD driveshafts

Acura recalling nearly 20k new MDX crossovers over AWD driveshafts

Acura is recalling nearly 20,000 of its 2014 MDX crossovers fitted with all-wheel drive over driveshaft concerns. The affected vehicles were built between May 6, 2013 and October 14, 2013, and have bolts that attach the driveshaft to the transmission that may not have been tightened properly.

Needless to say, an improperly secured driveshaft could lead to a number of problems, including everything from excessive drivetrain noise to full driveshaft detachment, a condition which could result in a loss of power and crash.

Default VW recalling Tiguan, Jetta Hybrid over electrical and gearbox woes

VW recalling Tiguan, Jetta Hybrid over electrical and gearbox woes

When it rains, it pours. Volkswagen, which is still reeling from a 2.6-million-unit global recall last month has just announced that another 65,992 US-spec models need to report in for repairs as part of two separate recalls.

The bigger recall, which covers 62,155 units, belongs to 2009 to 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan compact crossovers built between July 2007 and June 2011. This is in addition to the 61,000 Tiguans built between 2008 and 2011 that Volkswagen recalled last month.

Perhaps more infuriating for VW is that this latest Tiguan recall is similar to last month's electrical issue that saw 800,000 Tiguans recalled globally. There's a problem with the fuse tied to the exterior lights. The holder for said fuse may melt. No reason has been provided as to why it might melt, but there you go.

The other recall is significantly smaller - 3,837 Jetta Hybrids, built between October 2012 and October 2013 and covering model years 2013 and 2014. The dual-clutch gearboxes in these cars, internally known as DQ-200 units, may be subject to failure due to corrosive transmission oil additives. Corrosion could lead to an electrical short that causes a "stall-like condition" that could result in an accident.

Volkswagen will begin notifying the owners of affected Tiguans soon, while the rollout of Jetta Hybrid recall notices was started on December 6. Owners of affected vehicles will need to report to their local VW dealer for free repairs. In the Tiguan's case, that means another fuse replacement while Jetta Hybrid owners will get their transmission oil swapped out.

Default NHTSA closes the book on Dodge Viper probe

NHTSA closes the book on Dodge Viper probe

Whether it's a Dodge or an SRT, there's little question that a Viper is a whole lot of car to control. With 10 cylinders driving the rear wheels and a limited willingness to suffer fools, the occasional crash is bound to happen. But what if those crashes were the fault of the car itself, and not the driver?

That's the issue which Chrysler and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have been investigating. The issue revolves around the rear suspension knuckle in the previous-generation 2003-2010 Dodge Viper (including roadsters, coupes, Competition Coupes and ACR-X track models), which was found in eight cases to have cracked in the event of an accident.

NHTSA probed the issue over the course of eight months, but according to The Detroit News, the government safety agency has determined that the suspension component failed in the course of these crashes, not before. That leaves nearly 10,000 Vipers – not to mention their manufacturer – in the clear and on the road.

Default BMW recalling a grand total of three X3s over instrument panel defect

BMW recalling a grand total of three X3s over instrument panel defect

"Due to a production process error" in the BMW X3, states the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the notice below, "the tear seam on the instrument panel was not manufactured correctly." Big friggin' whoop, you say? Well, NHTSA points out that it could hinder the deployment of the airbag and send fractures flying everywhere.

The problem was discovered in a select few examples of the 2013 BMW X3 – both xDrive 28i and 35i models – manufactured in the later part of February this year. And by "select few," we literally mean a few – as in three. Three examples are being recalled.

Default Acura recalls 7,387 new RLX sedans over suspension bolts

Acura recalls 7,387 new RLX sedans over suspension bolts

Acura has announced a recall for the 2014 RLX due to improperly tightened rear suspension bolts that could come loose and increase the risk of a crash. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has yet to formally issue a recall notice for the RLX, but Acura says that a total of 7,387 RLX sedans are affected, which seems to include markets outside of the US as there have only been 4,456 of the sedans sold through November.

While there isn't an official NHTSA statement, there is one complaint on the government agency's site for a similar incident that caused a driver to almost lose control of the vehicle. Recall notices will be mailed out to customers starting next month.

Default NHTSA upgrades Mercedes C-Class taillight probe

NHTSA upgrades Mercedes C-Class taillight probe

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration has upgraded a probe into the rear taillights of 252,867 Mercedes-Benz C-Class models from the 2008 to 2011 model year. The upgrade means the investigation is now an engineering analysis, the results of which will determine if a recall is issued.

The probe began in July when NHTSA received 21 complaints alleging a failure of the rear lights. Mercedes informed the agency that corroded connectors in the ground circuit to the taillight were causing connectors to overheat and melt, and that could lead to smoke and fire. Since July the number of complaints has risen to 402, one reporting an injury and five reporting fire. With older cars more prone to the situation, the engineering analysis has been initiated "to further study the risks and frequency of the issue." Mercedes says it is cooperating fully with the investigation.

Default GM recalling 1.5M cars in China for faulty bracket

GM recalling 1.5M cars in China for faulty bracket

General Motors and its Chinese partners have announced their second recall in the People's Republic this year, following a 2,653-unit recall of the Cadillac SRX earlier this year. This latest recall affects nearly 1.5 million cars built between 2006 and 2012. It's not explicitly stated, but as there's no movement from the US NHTSA, we suspect that the cars in question were all Chinese-built rather than imports.

The vast majority of the affected vehicles are Buick Excelles (pictured), with 1.2 million units being recalled over a faulty bracket that's meant to secure the fuel pump. The Excelles in question were built between 2006 and 2012, while an additional 250,000 Chevrolet Sail superminis, built between April 2009 and October 2011, are being recalled for a similar reason.

According to the PRC's Administration for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, the faulty bracket could crack and potentially cause a fuel leak.

Default Maserati calling in new Quattroporte for electrical issue

Maserati calling in new Quattroporte for electrical issue

Exotic automobiles are just that: exotic. As in, rare. While Maserati is trying is darnedest to emerge from the fringes, its products are still less common than competitors from Germany, Japan or even the UK. Which is probably – more so than any superior quality or safety standards – why we rarely see the Trident marque's products the subject of a recall. Although it does happen upon occasion.

Back in the spring, Maserati had to call in over seven thousand examples of the Quattroporte, GranTurismo and Alfa 8C over rust issues. Now that the new Quattroporte is upon us, the Modenese automaker has apparently run into another small problem.

This time the issue revolves around the wiring harness for the alternator/starter motor, an improper crimp in which could cause the battery cable to short and start a fire. As a result, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is prompting 63 owners of the 2014 Quattroporte GTS V8 to bring their cars in to their local Maserati dealer to have the wiring harness replaced.

Lincoln bringing in MKZ Hybrid over rollaway risk

RECALL Subject : Transmission can be Shifted out of Park/FMVSS 114
Report Receipt Date: NOV 25, 2013
NHTSA Campaign Number: 13V594000
Component(s): POWER TRAIN
Potential Number of Units Affected: 7,153
Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company

SUMMARY:
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid vehicles manufactured April 26, 2012, through September 24, 2013. Due to a manufacturing error, the transmission range sensor may not function properly allowing the affected vehicles to be shifted out of the Park position without first applying the brake pedal. Thus, these vehicles fail to conform with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 114, "Theft Protection."

CONSEQUENCE:
Without requiring the brake to be pressed, the vehicle may be unintentionally shifted out of Park, allowing it to roll which may result in a crash.

REMEDY:
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with new software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in January 2014. Customers may contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 13C09.
