Electric Scion iQ EV to debut in 2012

let's compare.
car: $20k let's say
in 5 years let's say it's worth $10, so that's $2k depreciation/cost a year.
+ charging/fuel - even if charging only, let's say $3/day or $1k/yr
+ insurance - let's say $1k
so that's $4k a year assuming NO GAS is used and NO cost for parking!
taxi: let's say $10 each way, twice a day then, x5 days a week, x 50 weeks a year, or $5k.
see, it's already pretty close.

Our man Damon Lavrinc is at the media introduction of the 2012 Scion iQ, and he reports that the diminutive hatchback will be priced from $15,995 (including destination charges) when it hits U.S. showrooms. Scion now says the iQ's U.S. launch, which has been postponed on numerous occasions due to various issues including the March 11 quake in Japan, is set for this fall. Officials say the microcar will actually be launched in four phases, with the West Coast getting the iQ in October, followed by southern states in January, then the East Coast and, finally, the Midwest.
In typical Scion fashion, word is that base models are well equipped and there are few options. The base stereo includes Pandora integration, and an uplevel model will be available with navigation. As with all Scions, loads of accessories (i.e. springs, body kits and wheels) will be available for the iQ.
For comparison, the iQ's $15,995 price tag means that it's slightly more expensive than both the $15,500 Fiat 500 and the $14,730 Mazda2, both of which off significantly greater utility. There's still no word on EPA mileage estimates for the iQ.

So the iQ EV would probably be like $20k?
What is more interesting, that the Yaris is $2,000 cheaper and has more space.

Not to mention suspension which is considerably better at soaking up bumps than Yaris and easily you feel like you drive an big car, which means $$$ suspension.
Of course, they had to develop a lot of completely new components to make it as space efficient, and it uses very unique parts everywhere.
In fact, if they took European pricing, they would have priced it more :-)

iQ is premium small car... it has 8 airbags, vsc, alloy wheels, electric package, audio mp3 player with 6 speakers, vs Yaris that is bare bones.

The differential is on the front of the transaxle, pulling the front axle ahead of the engine, stretching the wheelbase, which leaves more passenger space inside.
Packaging in the engine bay is very compact, again allowing for more passenger space.
The heating/air-conditioning system is in the front centre of the car, instead of being in front of the front passenger. This allows the front passenger seat to be pulled closer to the firewall, making room for a rear seat. Although it is only 1-foot longer than the smart fortwo, the iQ has room for a back seat.
The fuel tank is flat, allowing it to sit below the floor instead of being in front of or over the rear axle (in most cars, the rear seat sits over the fuel tank). The rear seat is over the rear axle, so the flat fuel tank leaves room for that back seat.
There is a rear window airbag to protect the heads of the rear seat passengers. Like in a pickup truck, rear passengers are literally right up against that rear window.
All this innovation costs money. There were rumours that the new Yaris would share the iQ platform and its new technology, which would have allowed for development costs to be shared by more vehicles. But that did not happen so the iQ will have to pay for itself.

Yeah, I remember that... Wonder what went on there?

...probably just a rumour, and cost and time... The development of the Gen3 Yaris and iQ were probably overlapping somewhat, meaning that any spin-offs from the iQ will have to wait for the next-gen Yaris. But we can hope that some of the new technology will have filtered down to the Gen7 Camry and next-gen Corolla (flat fuel tank, differential ahead of the transaxle).
