Arrow June 2011 Auto Sales Thread

The 2 largest Japanese automakers ramped up incentive spending this month, a sign the companies have largely moved past earlier production problems, according to the website Edmunds.com.

Toyota Motor Co. (TM, 7203.TO) boosted its June incentive spending 31% over the previous month, while Honda Motor Co. (HMC 7267.TO) added 4% to its average incentives.

The increased promotional activity reverses the trend in May, when Toyota and Honda slashed incentive spending 26% and 46%, respectively. Incentives are still far lower than a year ago, when automakers faced a glut in the wake of the recession.

Honda is also offering a program that lets car buyers lock in incentives at the time of purchase even before the car is delivered, a strong play aimed at protecting market share, Edmunds.com said.

"By kicking up their incentive spending, Toyota and Honda are sending a clear message that production levels are starting to return, even if those vehicles haven't yet hit dealer lots," Edmunds.com industry analysis director Jessica Caldwell said.

Industry-wide, incentives climbed 2% in June to $2,165 per vehicle. Japanese automakers together raised incentive spending 9.1%, while their South Korean counterparts cut spending 8.2%. Incentives from U.S. automakers ticked 0.2%, as European automakers increased incentives 5%.

Ford Motor Co. F +0.44% led among U.S. automakers in June with an 11% increase over the previous month's incentives.

TOKYO—Japan's auto sales slumped 23% from a year earlier in June, marking the second straight month of slower declines and signalling that auto makers are rebounding from a sales plunge after the March 11 earthquake disrupted vehicle supplies to customers.

Sales of new cars, trucks and buses totaled 225,024 vehicles in June, down from 293,537 a year earlier, falling for the 10th consecutive month, as production bottlenecks due to parts shortages from plants damaged by the disaster prevented smooth vehicle supply to dealerships, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association said on Friday.

June's drop in sales wasn't as bad as the 38% fall in the previous month, which followed a record monthly sales plunge of 51% in April.

Sales of Toyota Motor Corp. vehicles sank 37.5% to 87,671 in June, but those of its luxury Lexus brand jumped 76.3% to 3,792.

Nissan Motor Co.'s sales rose 4.2% to 45,113, while Honda Motor Co.'s sales sagged 32.3% to 30,040.

The figures don't include sales of mini vehicles with engine capacities of 660 cubic centimeters or less.

The scarcity of electronic devices and other critical components pushed all Japanese car makers to idle their domestic plants right after the disaster hit, leaving many show rooms with only a few vehicles for sale.

The auto makers were able to resume manufacturing in April, as their suppliers restored production, though they used only about half of their capacity at that time.

However, major car makers are bringing factories back to full production earlier than they expected thanks to tireless efforts by parts makers to speed repairs to their facilities.

"Our initial best guess was that full production wouldn't be restored until autumn, meaning delayed output of 2 million vehicles," Toyota Executive Vice President Atsushi Niimi said recently. "But the pace of recovery has picked up to the point that we'll be back to normal by July, which means only 900,000 vehicles will be affected."

Nissan and Honda have also said that their production volumes are almost back to normal.

The swift re-establishment of production volumes should reduce back-orders at dealerships, helping auto sales to pick up toward the end of the year, Toshiyuki Shiga, the chairman of the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, said earlier this month. He is also the chief operating officer of Nissan.

Nissan said last week it projects its domestic sales to increase 1.7% to 610,000 vehicles for this fiscal year through March.

Toyota estimates its sales decline in the domestic market will be limited to 7.6% with a volume of 1.3 million vehicles in this fiscal year. Honda expects a narrower drop of 1.7% to 565,000 vehicles this fiscal year.

DETROIT – General Motors dealers in the United States reported 215,358 total sales in June, an 11% gain compared to June 2010. The gain was the result of continued solid retail demand for the company’s wide selection of fuel-efficient vehicles. Retail sales for GM’s brands rose 16% for the month, compared to a year ago, and were 4% higher than May.

For the month, Chevrolet Cruze had retail sales 153% higher than the Chevrolet Cobalt it replaced, and total sales above 20,000 for the 3rd straight month. The 32 MPG highway-rated GMC Terrain and Chevrolet Equinox compact crossovers saw a combined retail sales increase of 78% during the month. Passenger car and crossover retail sales also rose substantially, up 33% and 24%, respectively.

Total sales for GM’s full-size pickups – Chevrolet Silverado and Avalanche, and GMC Sierra, rose 15% compared to May, while retail sales increased 20% from last month.

"With continued strong consumer demand for GM’s fuel-efficient vehicles, June was another solid month for us," said Don Johnson, vice president, U.S. Sales Operations. “The month caps a successful first half of 2011 for us in the U.S. market – our sales are up and we’ve gained share profitably.”

In the first half of 2011, GM dealers in the United States have reported 1,261,633 vehicles sold – a 192,056 unit increase over the 1st half of 2010 – leading to total and retail market share gains.

Compared to last year, June fleet sales decreased 1% due to a planned decline in sales to rental accounts. Sales to commercial accounts rose 31% – the 15th consecutive month of commercial sales gains. Fleet deliveries accounted for 27% of GM’s total sales for the month.

Passenger Cars

Total sales of GM passenger cars increased 28% during June, compared to a year ago. The Cruze Eco, which delivers an estimated 42 miles-per-gallon highway, accounted for 17% of the model’s sales during the month.

The all-new Buick Regal continued to appeal to new consumers, recording 3,497 retail sales. For the month, approximately 30% of Regal sales were turbo models. Cadillac CTS retail sales rose 16%, spurred by continued strong demand for the all-new CTS Coupe.

Year-to-date through June, retail sales for GM’s passenger cars rose 43%.

Crossovers

Total crossover sales declined 2%, due to a planned reduction in sales to fleets, while retail sales were up 24% compared to last June. Retail sales of Equinox and Terrain were up 79% and 75% respectively.

For the 1st half of 2011, retail sales of GM’s crossovers were up 26%.

A major reason for the disappointing numbers is that Lexus offered almost zero incentives last month due to the lack of inventory. For instance, here in SoCal, the only incentives were the 2.9% financing on IS and RX. There were no special lease programs at all.
