All those points are valid.

However I notice they are not claiming anything about speed, interesting omission.

but yeah, i mean it is PR piece... cant expect it to be too factual... reading it over, you would think they got 300lbs of torque and 50mpg from 2.0l engine.
What about final drive ratio? A shorter final drive ratio will increase fuel consumption. Do CVTs typically run a shorter final drive ratio (perhaps to compensate for the perceived slower acceleration)?

Seems like a gimmick, I thing dsg and all dual clutch transmissions do the trick well. Maybe I speak to hastily, I'll reserve my judgement until I go for a test drive.

You can engineer whatever ratio you want, it ultimately depends on the manufacturer. But CVT's ARE NOT limited to a higher ratio.

For example, the initial through final speed ratios on the Nissan Sentra CVT are not the same found on the Maxima (or was it Altima?) CVT.

I just realized that this Skyactiv transmission is very similar in idea to the IS-F transmission. Holy ****. GO Mazda.

The IS F turns this idea on its head by employing lockup in all gears except first when in manual mode. This eliminates any power loss from torque converter from 2nd through 8th gear while preserving desirable torque multiplication in first gear for stunning launch acceleration. The result is a direct feel unlike any other automatic, and right now response to the throttle.
