Report: High-performance VW Beetle R confirmed for U.S.

The 2012 Volkswagen Beetle is fresh off its global unveiling earlier today, and the good-looking hatch appears to be dead serious about appealing to the masses. Volkswagen will offer the Beetle with diesel and petrol powerplants and a convertible is expected to arrive for the 2013 model year.

Good stuff, but what about red-blooded enthusiasts? The German automaker could have simply pointed out the availability of the 2.0T model as the driver's Beetle, but Team VW apparently has bigger and hopefully better plans. Car and Driver is reporting that VW has officially announced that a high-performance Beetle R will be available for U.S. consumption. C/D points out that the last Beetle also came in a hi-po RSi variant, though the hatchback was a Euro-only affair and it was a complete bust.

We're more hopeful for the Beetle R, if only because the Beetle is more attractive and far more masculine in appearance than its predecessor. It could help, too, if VW offers the high-output 2.0T as the powertrain of choice. Under the hood of the Golf R, the boosted powerplant cranks out 265 horsepower, which should be more than enough motivation to make the Beetle R feel like a hot hatch star.

I want a Beetle GT3 RS Roll-cage, two alcantara seats et al, remove the back bench and other goodies you find in a Porsche GT3 RS, but still make this thing a DSG

Default Spy Shots: VW Beetle R is one mean bug

VW Beetle R is one mean bug

Volkswagen's R lineup currently consists of the Golf R in North America, and the too-cool-for-school Scirocco R in Europe. It hasn't exactly been a secret as to which VW would next get the R treatment; the German manufacturer reportedly confirmed that a hotter Beetle would be coming to the US. That announcement, in August 2011, was followed up by a production-ready Beetle R Concept at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.

After some wait, we're finally seeing spy shots of the Beetle R in Germany. The mule shown in the images here is wearing the R-Line bodykit, which adds sportier front and rear fascias, side skirts, dual exhausts and a not-so-subtle spoiler. Topped off with Volkswagen's traditional, five-spoke R wheels, we'd be just fine with the Beetle R coming to market as is.

Our spy photographer, though, seems to think that the production R will get even sportier sheetmetal, which we take to mean the more assertive look shown on the Frankfurt show car. Larger intakes on the front fascia, a bigger rear spoiler and vertical vents on the rear bumper could all be upcoming. Whether a production model will include the concept's polished wheels (R cars haven't traditionally embraced that look), vented hood and the quad-tipped exhausts remains to be seen.

Sporty brakes with bright, red calipers give the matte gray Beetle some visual flair, while our spy photographers claim the 2.0-liter mill under the mule's curved hood will generate the same 296 horsepower that's coming with the next Golf R. Our spies report a deep exhaust note from this uprated engine, too.

Default 2014 Volkswagen Beetle Global RallyCross Championship Car Revealed

The 2014 Global RallyCross Championship got underway back in May and after the first two rounds it’s America’s Scott Speed, driving for the Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross team, who sits at the top of the points ladder.
The Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross team, which also includes Tanner Foust, is currently using a Polo rallycross car but soon it will switch to this new Beetle rallycross car.

Like the rest of the cars competing in GRC, the new Beetle rallycross car is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivering 544 horsepower to all four wheels. It also features a sequential six-speed transmission, multiplate limited-slip differentials at the front and rear, strut-type suspension with ZF dampers at all four corners, 17-inch wheels, and massive brake discs (14.0-inch front and 11.8-inch rear) with four-piston aluminum calipers.

The Beetle cuts quite a dash with its outsize rear wing, widebody fenders, and aggressive front fascia. Overall, the car is 168.8 inches long and 71.7 inches wide, and has to weigh in at a minimum of 2,668 pounds, per series regulations. With this combination of low weight, high horsepower, and all-wheel-drive traction, the Beetle rallycross car is predicted to sprint from 0-60 mph in just 2.1 seconds.

Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross will start using the new Beetle rallycross car this weekend at the GRC event in Washington, D.C. Recently, Rhys Millen took to the streets of the nation’s capital driving his own Hyundai Veloster rallycross car.

Default VW Releases New Photos of the Beetle Dune, Says it Could be Built

Remember VW’s Beetle Dune Concept revealed at this year's Detroit Auto Show? The German carmaker has decided to release more photos with the study, which is described as having a “near-production design.”

VW says everything about the car is feasible, which practically makes it a production vehicle. With the Beetle Dune study, Volkswagen is “looking much more realistically towards a production vehicle,” which would become the sportiest Beetle ever – always according to the carmaker.

However, the engine mounted on the study is not the most powerful VW has to offer. The turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine produces 207hp (210PS) and is mated to a six-speed DSG transmission. Still, that is good enough for a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration of 7.3 seconds and a top speed of 227 km/h (141 mph).

Just like all powerful production Beetles, the front-wheel drive Beetle Dune features a standard electronic XDS differential lock.

Of course, none of the information you have just read is new, but the simple fact that VW has decided to revisit the Beetle Dune study and organize a new photo shoot means that its intentions are serious and that we may see a production model – a cross version of the Beetle – sooner, rather than later.

Default Volkswagen Beetle Dune on sale early 2016 - report

Click here to view more photos

Will cost 2,800 EUR more than the standard model

British magazine CAR is reporting Volkswagen will introduce a production version of the Beetle Dune concept in 2016.

Volkswagen's board apparently approved in June the Beetle Dune for an early 2016 release as a beefed up version of the regular model. The car's marketing chief Matthias Zauner says the Beetle Dune will be offered as a convertible as well and it is believed the pricing will increase by around 2,800 EUR compared to the equivalent Beetle.

Despite receiving an increased ride height and a beefed up body, the Beetle Dune will remain a two-wheel drive car and the differences compared to the regular Beetle will be "almost exclusively visual" according to Zauner.

Details about the engine lineup are not available at this point but most likely the car will get the Beetle’s higher-end motors. As a reminder, the concept came with a 2.0-liter rated at 210 PS (154 kW) working with a 6-speed dual-clutch DSG.

The Dune will allegedly be the first of many other Beetle spin-offs planned by Volkswagen as part of an entire sub-lineup.
