Lightbulb TEXAS: Speed Limit Raising to 85!

Like they say... Everyhthing is bigger & faster in the Lone Star State!

NIIICE!!!

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas House approved a bill that would allow the speed limit on some highways to be raised to 85 mph, which would be the highest in the nation.

The measure passed Wednesday on a voice vote was part of a larger transportation bill. It would authorize the Texas Department of Transportation to raise the speed limit on designated lanes or entire stretches of roadway after doing engineering and traffic studies, the Dallas Morning News reported Thursday.

The Senate is considering a similar bill.

"They have high-speed roadways in Europe, and there could be some merit in having some of those highways in Texas," said Rep. Lois Kolkhorst of Brenham, who introduced the bill. "Given the right engineering, we should consider it."

Texas currently has more than 520 miles of interstate highways where the speed limit is 80 mph.

"Hi-yo, Silver! Away!"

I keep hearing my dad, we should move to Texas. It is dirt cheap. When it hits 100 mph I might move there

The "de facto" speed limit on many stretches of highway in Texas is already 85-90 MPH in the fast lane.

The "legal" speed limit is 75 MPH but cops routinely allow 10 MPH over the limit in these areas.

people drive and will continue to drive at whatever speed they are comfortable at given the current traffic conditions. If the speed limit suddenly became 100, I would still drive 80 because thats the speed I am comfortable at. Grandma isnt suddenly going to start driving 80 when she used to drive 60 on the freeway.

understandable but my point is with the flow of traffic on lets say a 65mph road, its usually at 80mph. what happens now when you raise it to 85 and the flow of traffic speed increases?
