Should the Government apologize to Toyota and give money back?
Toyota/Lexus got raped by the Government, rabid anti_Toyota fanbois and the MEDIA for over a year in regards to this. They had Congressional hearings, they got killed in the media, they were called deathtraps, "stop driving Toyotas", Toyota stopped selling cars for awhile etc etc. They paid millions, they apologized, Mr. Toyoda cried, they added safety features, they spent hundreds of millions on recalls, etc etc
The damage is HUGE. The jokes, the banter, the chatter, Toyota fell from grace due to this supposed problem of theirs. They added a 2 year maintenance plan and offered huge discounts to keep customers.
That ended up not being a problem of theirs. We can go back and quote people here and all over the internet throwing Toyota/Lexus under the bus and now they eat crow. Tasty crow. Huge huge glasses of SHUT THE HELL UP. Not a peep. Hello?
I don't think any other company would have spent the money they did nor fix the problem that wasn't a problem like Toyota did. They should be highly commended.
What is the true damage? Surely in the billions.
What are your thoughts?

It's kind of amazing how much press Toyota got for their recalls in the beginning and how LITTLE we've heard of the government saying oh ***** we messed up. Like, I saw it as a side headline one day online and that's it. Given how big of a deal the Toyota fiasco was, it seems like an even LARGER deal that the whole thing was basically a hoax, no?

The government, as an entity shouldn't no. The individuals in the government themselves who pushed against Toyota and blamed them should have all their assets liquidated and given to Toyota as just compensation. It is true, our tax money should not go to other car companies, but I wouldn't mind those in power who basically lied to pay the price. Make them pony up as it was their fault the company took such hits. Make the media who blamed Toyota pay up as well.

I think the people who were involved with pointing the finger at Toyota should make a public apology. It is only right. Yes, the money should be given back to Toyota.
It creates a really bad precedent when things like this happen. Sadly, the damage has been done. Toyota should stand proud once again.

I look at the bright side; Toyota have fully investigated their products and business model. All future products will be even more thoroughly engineered and we may even see more adventurously styled vehicles appearing to win back market share. Plus all Toyotas in the UK now come with a 5 year/100,000 mile warranty - something we probably wouldn't have got at this point.
