2013 Mercedes S-Class spied in Germany
Our spy photographers have managed to catch several new pictures of the 2013 Mercedes S-Class.
Caught undergoing testing in southern Germany, the prototype is covered in a blanket of camouflage which hides many of the key styling details. While this is unfortunate, we can get a glimpse of the larger grille and CLS-inspired headlights with LED indicators. Furthermore, the car looks slightly larger than its predecessor and will likely have a design influenced by the F700 concept.
As we have previously reported, the new S-Class may be available exclusively with hybrid engines. Nothing is official, but Mercedes believes this will ensure the model is compliant with rising fuel economy and emission standards. Regardless of whether or not the hybrid-only lineup is approved, the next-generation model will be available as a plug-in hybrid. It will likely feature the same powertrain as the S 500 Vision concept which should enable it to average 78 mpg (3.0 L/100km).

Yeah, an S-Class that gets 78 MPG. That'll be the day!
Unless this plugin hybrid they're talking about is at least as advanced as the Chevy Volt but with an even bigger battery (reasonable considering the S-Class's size) and can go 50 miles on battery power alone. Perhaps that 78 MPG figures in the all electric run.
Anyway, this car looks looong from the side.

I am digging the sweater vest look......
The car will probably stay very warm...
But yeah if it gets 70+mpg everyone will be in-trouble.
Lexus should probably do a better job on the next H models. They need to get at least 30-40 mpg...

lets me honest with ourselves, the S class has always been the pinnacle of luxury of this segment and grabs the eyes and hearts of most people. I like the current generation very much, and with the face lift with the new LEDs in the headlights and fog area and revised brake lights, it looks even better

The W221 set high standards for MB so yeah, it will be a real challenge for MB to one-up on that.
Still, I am looking forward to the next-gen model (assuming that we will still be here after 2012).
Oh and yeah, I'm keeping an eye out for the AMG Models as well

These "spy" photos are always so lame as you can tell very little about the actual car....the intent of all the camo.
What I do know is that it will surely depreciate like all of the other ones. 1-2 year old S-classes are abundant and appealing at the moment.

I love the profile so far, looks better already in profile than the current model.
They also got rid of those goofy wheel arches, FINALLY. I can't stand to look at the current S-Class because of those wheel arches.
European mpg standards versus US standards, totally different. People always forget this .
I very highly doubt that the S-Class plug-in will get 78 mpg EPA mileage. A lot of this will depend on exactly how mpg ratings are calculated. The Chevy Volt doesn't even get an overall EPA rating that high. Volt's all-electric rating is 93 mpg, and it's overall rating is 60 mpg.
I disagree; I really dislike the current generation simply because of those ridiculous wheel arches. I can already tell the next-gen model will be better-looking.
