quick story. my uncle in italy owned an original 500 when i went over there a long time ago. he also lived on a MOUNTAINTOP. the 500 of course has a 500cc (.5L) engine, and it might even have been 2 cylinder? anyway, totally anemic engine. come to think of it now it might have been some kind of 500 'wagon' thingie, so a bit more back room, because he picked up me, my 2 sisters and my mom at the airport in it, and we went with luggage to his place. small problem. we couldn't get up the mountain, it literally just couldn't pull us up. so he left a couple of us at the bottom and made 2 trips.

not always, depends where you are. in manhattan for example, apartments are TINY.

I think us Americans are spoiled and we tend to be bigger in size due to the abundance of cheap food and our lackadaisical lifestyle where we have to pay a fee to physically exert ourselves (aka gyms).
i would say 'fortunate', not spoiled, and of course people can get out and walk around the block (don't have to belong to a gym). most americans also live where there's just so much more space than in cramped european countries for example.

as for 'lackadaisical' you have a pretty low opinion of the u.s.! we generally have the most productive workforce in the world.
