Diesel Ford Fiesta Smokes Prius, Gets 62.5 MPG
Talk about having the right product in the wrong place. Ford will be debuting a version of the new as-of-now Euro-only Ford Fiesta Econetic at the British Motor Show later this month equipped with a miserly 89 HP, 1.6-liter TDCi turbodiesel engine. How miserly? It's good for 75 MPG in imperial gallons, which gives it a Prius-smoking 62.5 MPG here in the US of A. Something tells us Ford would have no problem selling a few of them here, considering the tectonic shift towards smaller, more fuel-efficient cars we saw evidence of yesterday. No word on US availability of the Econetic when the Fiesta hits our shores as a 2010 model, but it's a fair wager Mulally and Co. are mulling it over.

I've read elsewhere that European diesel models like this aren't available with automatic transmissions. Now that the majority of US drivers don't know how to drive a stick shift.....

Sure it beats the Prius, but it certainly looks smaller than the Prius. Then there is the engine; only 89HP? I wonder what is the 0-60 time, 14 seconds?
A smaller, slower vehicle beating the Prius in fuel economy. Nothing noteworthy here.

People who would buy them are not looking for the best 0-60 speed. They want fuel economy and that car delivers it.
Consider the Prius takes off on a 22 HP less engine than the Ford.
Ford at 89 HP is 13 more HP than the 08 Prius at 76 HP @ 5000 rpm
The electric is 67 HP @ 1200-1540 rpm

Under full acceleration, both power sources work together to provide maximum oomph. But under lighter load conditions such as stop-and-go traffic, the Prius alternates between the two, often running on battery power alone. A regenerative braking system converts energy normally lost as heat into electricity to charge the car's battery pack. The gas engine produces 76 horsepower and 82 pound-feet of torque, while the electric motors generate the equivalent of 67 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.

to give this some perspective....the new VW Jetta diesel already has a waiting list in the US. Look on autotrader for used Jetta TDI's....crazy prices.
The demand is there.

Agreed. The Insight would be a better deal I suppose if you're looking to save gas money and in a clean way.
