Post Paris may say 'non!' to SUVs

http://www.freep.com/article/2010122...ay-non-to-SUVs

PARIS -- Paris is planning to test restrictions on gas-guzzling vehicles, likely including sport utility vehicles, as part of attempts to curb pollution.

Denis Baupin, an environmental official in the mayor's office, said Wednesday that sport utility vehicles and old diesel cars are likely to be targeted in upcoming test restrictions.

To any Parisian who drives an SUV, Baupin's advice is: "Sell it and buy a vehicle that's compatible with city life.

"I'm sorry, but having a sport utility vehicle in a city makes no sense," Baupin told RTL radio.

Paris, Lyon, Grenoble and Aix-en-Provence are among the cities planning to try restrictions on gas-guzzlers in late 2011 or 2012.

The Environment Ministry says officials in each city are still discussing precisely how the restrictions would work -- what types of cars would be affected, in what neighborhoods, during what hours or periods of the year. Exact penalties are also an open question.

Many other European cities, including London and Berlin, already have "low emission zones," with varying restrictions on the type of vehicles targeted.

Haha, sounds like that miserable city is gonna get even worse.

God bless the USA!

With that being said, if they are going to curb emissions, what they should be curbing and crapbucket diesels. I was in Paris in the fall, and the diesel stench in the air is unbearable.

Not sure what "diesel stench" smells like.

I've got a couple of diesels that smell much better than any conventional gas guzzler.

Your clean diesels probably smell far different than the 15 year old Citroen/Renault/etc. that are common in Europe.

I don't know how people navigate the narrow streets in Europe with these big vehicles anyway.

I agree to an extent that SUVs serve almost no purpose in city life however I do believe people should still have the freedom to do what they please with their money. With that being said I think they should just tax heavier on SUVs. I don't know much about their government or personal lifestyles but I think that's pretty fair.

Many if not most big cities are not personal car/SUV friendly, so nothing new to me. Although this is a different spin on restrictions in the city.
