Nissan, Mitsubishi to expand business tie-up
Tomoko A. Hosaka / Associated Press

Tokyo— Nissan Motor Co. and smaller rival Mitsubishi Motors Corp. will deepen business ties to get ahead in the fiercely competitive global car industry, including establishing a minicar joint venture in Japan that could eventually expand to other countries.

In the agreement announced today, the two Japanese automakers will also make more cars for each other under what is known as an "original equipment manufacture" or OEM partnership. Under such a deal, one automaker supplies vehicles to another automaker to sell under its own brand, enabling companies to lower production costs through economies of scale.

Nissan will produce a small van to be sold under the Mitsubishi brand for the Japanese market, while Mitsubishi will make an SUV sold under the Nissan brand in the Mideast, the companies said
.

To cope with capacity shortfalls in Thailand, Nissan will shift production of its brisk-selling Navara pickup to Mitsubishi's plant in Thailand, said Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn. It may collaborate on a new one-ton pickup model as well.

"In the global auto industry, cooperation on specific projects among automakers is becoming increasingly common," Ghosn said at a joint press conference with his Mitsubishi counterpart.

"It is, in fact, a signal of how our industry is evolving to sustain success over the long term, by leveraging size, scale and investments more effectively to create more value," he said.

News of the deal leaked out before the announcement, sending investors scrambling to buy Mitsubishi shares. The issue surged 8.5 percent, while Nissan rose just 0.3 percent.

In Japan, Nissan aims to bolster its market share to 15 percent from the current 13 percent. To do that, Ghosn said, it needs to increase its presence in the growing minicar market — an area of particular expertise for Mitsubishi.

The two companies are moving to establish a 50-50 joint venture next year and release a new minicar model in 2012. Mitsubishi President Osamu Masuko said he hopes the JV will fuse his company's design and production know-how with Nissan's strong purchasing power.

Mini vehicles are defined by specifications unique to Japan: maximum length of 11.15 feet, width of 4.86 feet, height of 6.56 feet and engine displacement of less than 660 cc.

The category is popular in Japan for its money-saving potential, including lower fuel costs and taxes, as well as maneuverability in narrow back streets. They comprise about a third of Japan's annual vehicle sales.

With demand for low-cost cars growing around the world, Ghosn said minicars have potential in overseas markets.

A strong backbone in Japan "allows us to really come with the products that could be competitive even outside Japan, and we want to pursue this opportunity with Mitsubishi," he said.

Nissan and Mitsubishi aren't the only ones eyeing the minicar market. In September, Toyota Motor Corp., the world's biggest automaker, announced plans to expand its product line to include minivehicles made by subsidiary Daihatsu Motor Co.

Nissan and Mitsubishi may collaborate on electric cars in the future, but it's "too early" to embark on anything concrete, Ghosn said.

Nissan makes the Leaf, among the world's first mass-market electric vehicles, which was rolled out last week. Mitsubishi's i-MiEV electric minicar went on sale in Japan in April.

"There is no absolute opposition to cooperation," Ghosn said. "We can, if we have a win-win situation, if we have mutual benefits."

Cheapest way of expanding your line-up to fill holes. And Nissan is all about making a profit.

This is why I don't care too much for Nissan, it seems like they always take the easy way out. Sometimes easy isn't always the best.

Question M = Diamante

TOKYO -- Could Mitsubishi be bringing back a luxury sedan in the vein of the Diamante?

According to published reports, the troubled automaker plans to sell a rebadged version of the Infiniti M, that brand’s top tier model, in Japan to fill Mitsubishi’s long-running gap in premium offerings.

The plan is under study. But in an interview last month, Mitsubishi President Osamu Masuko denied Mitsubishi would leverage OEM manufacturing deals to flesh out its U.S. lineup.

That goes for large luxury cars as well as pickups, he said.

Mitsubishi is shifting to smaller cars because its bigger ones don’t sell well, he added. Plus, exporting a vehicle from Japan makes little sense given the yen’s climb against the dollar.

Still, turning to Nissan for a luxury offering is an intriguing idea. Mitsubishi’s Galant, the model most passable as upper crust, is a slow seller not so much because of its size. The Galant is slow because it’s, well, the Galant -- an aging, humdrum dog that has outlived its appeal.

Mitsubishi has already announced it will phase out the car by 2013.

Diamante sales peaked at 25,267 in 1993 but dipped below 10,000 before Mitsubishi decided in 2004 to kill it. Mitsubishi froze luxury development in the mid-2000s because of financial woes.

But with the Infiniti M, Mitsubishi wouldn’t have to worry about costly r&d. That model, sold as the Nissan Fuga in Japan, is Nissan Motor Co.’s top-shelf flagship, and it is fresh off a full model change in late 2009. Plus, the Infiniti M has a new hybrid variant.

It’s tempting to wonder if that might emerge as the mysterious hybrid vehicle Mitsubishi plans to introduce in 2013.

According to Japan’s Nikkei business daily, the Mitsubishi-badged Fuga could go on sale in Japan as early as this year.

So wait, the NIssan Fuga is badged here Infiniti M and then would be badged a Mitsubishi Diamante too? lol

I would think it would be Maxima or Skyline/G37 based since the last time it was sold the Diamante was a 30-40k car competing against the ES, TL, Avalon, Catera at the time.

Interesting.

Rumormill: Mitsubishi to sell rebadged Infiniti M... new Diamante in the cards?

Mitsubishi is reportedly considering selling a rebadged version of the Infiniti M sedan in order to fill its void of premium offerings in its home market of Japan. However, Automotive News notes that Mitsubishi's President, Osamu Masuko, has stated that the automaker will not leverage manufacturing deals with other companies in order to expand its lineup here in the United States, so don't expect to see a Mitsu-branded Infiniti on our shores anytime soon.

Mitsubishi's last endeavor into the luxury sedan market was with the Diamante – a car that suffered from lackluster sales numbers during its run throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. Due to Mitsubishi's financial woes during the mid-2000s, luxury car development was put on hold. Now, though, selling a rebadged version of the Infiniti M (or Nissan Fuga, as it's known in Japan) would insulate Mitsubishi from research and development costs, making it easier for the automaker to launch back into the luxury segment.

Automotive News reports that the Mitsubishi-badged Infiniti could go on sale in Japan as early as this year. Expect the standard gas version to be the first to wear a triple-diamond badge, though Mitsubishi may sell a version of the M Hybrid, as well.

Off-topic but:
Man, this was one of the most epic Mitsubishi vehicles back in the day (aside from Lancer Evolution models):

Ahh, the Galant VR-4 Legnum.

^^^
that car is like a Mitsubishi version of the Toyota Caldina and the Nissan Stagea

Sadly, it seems like JDM Sport Wagons are being phased-out.......but still, they WERE legends in my book.

JDM at its finest

It's too late for Mitsubishi. I was a fan of the 1st gen Diamante. Everything went downhill for the Diamante with the 2004 facelift.

I know Nissan needs the $$, but this would be a bad move.

Mitsu has a bad reputation in Japan and the Diamante line is in a lower segment.

Arrow Update

TOKYO -- Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is getting a new flagship luxury model that could -- in Japan at least -- be a successor to the Diamante sedan that was killed off in 2004.

Under an agreement announced Sept. 22, Mitsubishi will start selling a rebadged version of the Nissan Fuga sedan, known as the Infiniti M in the United States, in Japan next summer.

Mitsubishi said it is not considering selling the vehicle overseas. It also declined to say what the car would be called or what the company’s sales target is.

As part of the agreement, the two companies have also begun negotiations about Nissan receiving a version of Mitsubishi’s Minicab-MiEV all-electric commercial minivan.

The OEM supply deal is just the latest between Mitsubishi and Nissan Motor Co. -- the companies signed a cooperation agreement in December 2010.

Nissan has already agreed to provide its NV200 Vanette compact van to Mitsubishi, and the 2 companies formed a joint venture to make mini vehicles for Japan’s domestic market.

Mitsubishi’s bid to get a rebadged Fuga from Nissan was expected.

President Osamu Masuko said earlier this year the plan was under study. But he denied that that Mitsubishi would leverage OEM manufacturing deals to flesh out its U.S. lineup.

Still, adding an Infiniti-based offering could spice up its offerings in North America. Mitsubishi’s aging Galant is the current top rung offering in the United States. Mitsubishi has already announced it will phase out the car by 2013.

Mitsubishi’s previous flagship, the Diamante, saw its sales peak at 25,267 in 1993. But volume dipped below 10,000 before Mitsubishi decided in 2004 to kill it.

Mitsubishi froze luxury development in the mid-2000s because of financial woes.

Absolutely hilarious.

Sadly the Fuga/M has been a sales disaster everywhere so I am pretty sure this was done to make some money for Nissan. Maybe 2-3 modded in a 18 months.? No buzz at all. They really blew it considering how well received the last model was.

Of course it's a failure, your looking for a new car in a used car Mecca, if your looking for Chargers, 300, Impalas, Crown Vics, you can't miss them
