Default window tint...for looks, privacy, or cooling/preserving the interior

curious what's the main reason so many people tint automotive windows.

I'm thinking of having mine done and was wondering, does it really keep the interior cooler or is the more mirror like tint necessary.

I know most of them cut down on UV damage, right? what about infra-red?

also - I'm guessing huperoptikusa.com is one of the best....how about v-kool?

privacy is not my concern, that's why tints on my cars are 50%. i like to have a little color, and most importantly to block out heat (that's why i have ceramic)

and yes i have huper optik and i love them

I originally got it done because it is supposed to keep the interior cooler, but that seems pretty irrelavent since I can remotely lower my windows and moonroof from my office well before I get in to cool down the car. Driving around in the car with tint doesn't seem to be making a huge different to me, and as far as I know, Lexus windows already have a UV coat. As for privacy, I've 20% tint in the rears and black interior, but I never leave stuff in the back regardless.

I know there are other benefits to tints, but I always just liked the look and all other features are secondary. (Call me shallow)

I got it for everything, but the getting away with the dancing i do in the car while driving to school is an added bonus that came with the tinted windows

All of above.

- I can't stand Dubai heat in the car.
- Sometimes I like eating in the car.
- Beige interior is kinda ugly without the tint.

Looks, privacy, heat rejection, UV protection are all important benefits to me in that order. Safety is another consideration for shatter protection. I generally select tint in the 35% (darker) to 50% (lighter range).

The reason that anti-tint laws (which, I believe, started in NC), came about was because police officers were being placed at a safety-risk when stopping motorists. With dark-tint or one-way-tint windows, officers could not see people inside the car going for a gun or other weapon....with, unfortunately, some predictable results. There is also the fact that significantly dark-tints cut down on night-vision for the driver, too, making him or her less-likely to see hazards outside.

Of course, there is little problem with light-shade tints, and most states permit it up to a certain limit. Some manufacturers also use it to cut down on the A/C load in the summer.

In many of the cars I grew up in, there was also a dark-green or blue-green tint-stripe across the whole top of the windshield to boost the sun-visors, but, for whatever reason, that went out decades ago.

^^^

Community note : roll down your ALL your windows as soon as a cop pulls you over. Some cops would also prefer if you place your keys on the roof of the car, just in case you're perceived as a flight risk...

maximum heat and UV rejection, all the while trying to have it as dark as possible for privacy, especially for rear windows. less a/c is always a good thing in sunny socal (minus the crazy weather we've had the past few weeks). though i don't have the same percentage front and rear, i'm pleased with the balance of looks, privacy, and performance.

looks and privacy mainly. otherwise i would just get light ceramic tint for better heat rejection and better night visibility.

just a quick fyi... "tints" is not plural for "tint," in fact, tint is plural already.

I got my windows tinted. I got tint for my windows.

Tint is all encompassing, no matter how many windows, vehicles, layers, or colors of tint.

Here's another example:

"I have a bunch of cars."

"I have a bunch of tint."

notice no "s" on the end of tint, even though it is plural.

So "Bill currently tint windows for a living" is ok?
