Post Toyota plans 5 million cumulative hybrid sales by 2015

http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dl...308259976/1135

TOKYO (Reuters) -- Toyota Motor Corp. said today it wants to reach cumulative sales of 5 million hybrid vehicles in the early part of this decade.

Toyota, the pioneer in gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles, said earlier this month it had sold more than 2.68 million hybrid vehicles globally since it launched the first model in 1997.

The best-selling Prius and other models have received a boost in Japan especially in the last year thanks to government subsidies that favor hybrids over other fuel-efficient cars.

Toyota has a goal of selling at least 1 million hybrid vehicles a year in the early part of this decade, and plans to introduce a hybrid option across its whole lineup as early as possible in the 2020s.

Under a five-year environmental action plan to run through 2015 and released on Wednesday, the world's biggest automaker also said it would improve its vehicles' average fuel efficiency in all regions by 25 percent compared with 2005 levels.

Toyota (as well as other automakers) need to be as creative as possible to improve gas mileage, especially with upcoming CAFE Standards by 2016 (appropriate that their goal is for 2015).

Hybrids are one thing. I hope to see other alternative sources/technology in the next few years as well.

I totally agree with your points. I think engine technologies such as direct injection, turbocharging, displacement on demand, etc will be applied much more broadly by manufacturers to improve fuel economy while maintaining performance. Hybrid technology should improve too as each generation passes and Toyota has shown that with each generation of the Prius. The hybrid components such as the batteries should get lighter and more compact. However, overall it is just buying some time for alternatively powered vehicles until the technology is ready for consumer use.

They had better give us more than three Toyota hybrids to choose from then.

Thumbs up Update

Toyota has announced that it has cracked the 6 million unit milestone for global hybrid sales.

Toyota announced this week that its official hybrid sales count stood at 6.072 million units as of December 31, 2013, marking a major milestone for both Toyota and the gas-electric technology. Moreover, Toyota said it took just 9 months to sell its most recent batch of 1 million hybrids, representing the shortage period in the company's history to hit that mark.

Toyota began selling hybrid vehicles in late 1997 with the original Prius. Since then, Toyota's hybrid lineup has grown to include 24 models and 1 plug-in hybrid. Toyota will launch 15 new hybrid models worldwide over the next 2 years, including the Highlander Hybrid in the United States.

Toyota estimates that those 6 million hybrids have saved nearly 4 billion gallons of gas and reduced CO2 emissions by 41 million tons.

Toyota sold 1.3 million new hybrids in 2013. I expect them to sell 1.5 million/year by 2015 (they need new products like NX to do that).

After that, unless they do some micro hybrid for Kei cars, it will be very hard for Toyota to go over 2 million/year. Now it is time for other manufacturers - Honda, Ford, Hyundai to expand their lineup and sell it worldwide.

Hybrid/EV sales in US skyrocketed in 2013, hybrids up 14% and plugins/evs doubling, all together to 600k in 2013 for the USA, which is excellent.

I'm not surprised by your comment. I test drove the GS 450h and really really loved it too.

I really wish Lexus would bring the IS 300h to the United States...Choices are a very good thing...In Europe the IS 300h is selling very well.

While not perfect, the GSh blends Luxury and Sport so perfectly IMO. I'm waiting a year to see if 2015 has any major changes. If not I'm ready to pick up a 2014.

Agreed, it's all about choices. I could care less it it cannabilized ES300h sales, it helps expand the brand and bring in people who would otherwise consider different vehicles + it would help improve CAFE standards

in other news, it was reported that hybrids and electrics represented 4% of u.s. vehicle sales last year, and that at the detroit auto show there was basically no news or interest at all in them.

a MUCH, MUCH bigger deal is the use of aluminum in the new F-150, which, given that they sold 3/4 million in the u.s. in 2013, will have a vastly bigger impact on fuel consumption.

It could always go up with more additions like the IS300h to our shores, and the Model X and baby Model S should increase electric sales in the coming years.

As it stands, bravo Ford and the F-150

tesla sold a whopping 22,450 model S last year. even if sales doubled this year they would be interesting, but still irrelevant.

Enjoy your F-150... This is about hybrids and their success. It's a lot easier to switch to aluminum than to develop a hybrid.

Sales of 22,450 or 45,000 is ONLY irrelevant in terms of annual total sales of all vehicles or market share. But the fact that these numbers measure sales of a completely different type of vehicle -- unique on the market right now -- from a startup company that has only one vehicle on the market (compared to dozens from the largest mainline manufacturers), it is COMPLETELY relevant.
