Default Toyota Secures Supra Trademark

Full Story at the source [Car & Driver]

Toyota has applied to trademark the iconic Supra name, according to documents it filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on July 16. The company’s previous trademark on the model name expired in 2006, and for the past four years Toyota didn’t bother to renew it.

This may be more than just business as usual. Only four days earlier, Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda told journalists in Japan that he wants “to see the next Supra tested in the near future”, although he qualified that by adding “even if one president [Toyoda himself] says that we want to have a Supra again, the whole company is not going to be responding to that request.”

It will be interesting to see exactly what the next Supra would mean to Toyota. That car was the posterchild of the JZ and "Supra" is essentially synonymous with that engine. They have plenty to choose from now, but maybe a blown version of the GR-FSE would be a good idea.

Please, just don't make it hybrid-only.

I agree, over the past 10 years Toyota has implemented so much R&D, interesting to see what they might be able to put together as they are missing a car in that category.

bring it back, and no hybrid!

stroke the IS350/GS350 motor to 3.8L and put out a healthy N/A 370hp motor...i'd be happy with that, and it better have a targa top too

As long as it goes head to head with the GT-R in Price & Performance, I'm in.

would love to see the supra brought back. if they have to go hybrid, they should use the tesla motor with the 3.5L engine.

I feel like in order for them to make a statement again, the new Supra HAS to be a hybrid...

Try the 370Z first I'd say.

I'd like to see a base Supra with an NA engine and a Supra "Turbo" with the 150kw electric capacitor hybrid system from the race winning Supra HV-R. A true turbocharger may be too much to ask though.

Damn I should have tried to trademark it and sell it back to Toyota at a price.

I can tell if you are a car guy, when I say, what car do you think of when you hear the name Toyota?.... all car guys say Supra!!, MR2 is also acceptable..

I want to see the next supra be a head to head Corvette fighter! The Corvette is a nice, but it has many flaws especially the interior. I feel Toyota can make a Supra that is better then the Corvette at the same price point, we'll see.
