2010 US & Canadian ALG Residual Value Awards

Wink 2010 US & Canadian ALG Residual Value Awards


ALG has announced its annual Residual Value Awards, which honor those vehicles in each automotive segment predicted to retain the highest percentage of their original price after a conventional three-year period.

The awards are based on 2010 model year vehicles. ALG has also included awards for the brands that have the highest overall predicted resale values among all industry and all luxury vehicles. Award winners are featured on ALG.com and other automotive publications and websites dedicated to bringing the industry's best-performing models into the public eye.

ALG's 2010 Brand Study:
Subaru of America has won the Mainstream Brand Residual Value Award for the first time, jumping over perennially strong Honda. Subaru also received individual segment awards for the Forester in the Compact Utility Vehicle category and the Outback in the Midsize Utility Vehicle category.

Acura, a division of American Honda Motor Company, has won the Luxury Brand Residual Value Award for the second consecutive year.

ALG, the industry benchmark for residual values and depreciation data, announced its second annual Canadian Residual Value Awards, honoring the mainstream and luxury brands as well as the vehicles in each segment that are predicted to retain the highest percentage of their original price after a conventional retail period.

This year’s awards are based on 2010 model year vehicles. The ALG awards are derived after careful study of segment competition, historical vehicle performance and industry trends, and are based on analysis using only Canada-specific data.

ALG's 2010 Brand Study:

Subaru Canada, Inc. won the Mainstream Brand Canadian Residual Value Award, rising from fourth place last year. In addition, the brand received individual segment awards for the Impreza in the Mid-Compact Car category, the Legacy in the Midsize Car category, and the Impreza WRX STI in the Sporty Car category.

For the second year in a row Infiniti, the luxury division of Nissan Canada, Inc., has won the Luxury Brand Canadian Residual Value Award. Infiniti has one of the newest vehicle lineups and with its flagship, the G37 being refreshed for 2010, it continues to offer great value to consumers in the market for a luxury vehicle.

Acura better enjoy this while they can because they're still riding on the coat tails of their previous success with the old TL, TSX, and MDX - cars that were actually respectable. When the butt-ugly-beak-posse starts to hit the used market and nobody wants to buy one, ALG's "predictions" will change a little.

Even then, not sure how they "predict" that the 2010 models (most of which have sold miserably), will be worth more than their competitors in 3-4 years.

We go over this every year

Acura's cheapest car is what 28k and most expensive 55k. Of course it seems they high residuals, they don't depreciate like real luxury cars. What I find odd is the RL resale has been horrendous since 1996 and the current model had terrible resale since day one, their flagship. All the other cheaper vehicles do better.

Lexus being #2 is much more impressive since they sell anything from 32k-120k vehicles (and now 375k). So their having high resale is a REAL result.

BMW, Benz will always have a tougher time here since BMW sells from 28k-140k and Benz 32k-190k+ (forgot SLS price). You can buy a M5 for 40k today and AMG cars depreciate like mad b/c of their initial high MSRP.

Acura isn't really a luxury brand and really shouldn't even be included at this point.

Ugliness/looks have absolutely nothing to do with resale value.

I disagree. I think what MP is getting at is these are based on the older models which at least were bland/unoffensive at the worst. With the new undesirables they can't give away today new, it will hurt resale since no there will be much less demand/desire to own them.

Bingo. Five years ago Acuras were desireable because they had the reliability and dependability of a Honda, a little more technology and luxury, and looked conservatively handsome. It goes without saying that they sold pretty well and prev. gen TLs are still highly relished in the used market.

This new generation of cars has not sold nearly as well as the last so I would expect used values to go down based on that fact alone. Add to that the fact that their cars are lacking in features and technology compared to rivals, and I really cannot see a compelling reason to pick up and new Acura, whether now or in 4 years on the used market.

I am more than willing to give Acura credit where it is due, but IMO, ALG's "predictions" are based heavily on numbers and transaction values of older Acuras...cars that sold much better and were more competitive.

Yes, I think when they carve up the top 5, it's more hair-splitting than anything else. A buyer making wise choices in selecting specific models in top 5 will do well from a resale value standpoint in general.
