They must've heard about the LFA and how badly I wanted it. So they did me a favor and charge me something like this to make me feel like I got something exotic LOL.

I'll just go around and brag that I got the GS-F

If your car is a 2001 there is no way that can correct/ Don't they charge you based on the age/value of the car??

I believe it's 1.5% of the value... yes, one thing for sure it's an error.

That's waaayyy too much. It's supposed to be a percentage (0.65?) of the market value of the vehicle http://www.boe.ca.gov/property/Vol1a...vlf.pdf#page=9

What are the other fees listed on the renewal form?

Is that $986 simply the registration-fee alone, or does it also cover a personal-property tax as well (if that applies in CA)?

Don't know about CA, but here in VA, (some) counties (not the state itself) charge an annual car tax based on the car's yearly assessed value (from depreciation), somewhat like the annual real-estate tax you pay on a privately-owned house every year. That's because there are no county incomes taxes in VA, by law.

If that $986 in CA DOES include a tax in it (not just a registration fee) you can at least deduct it on Schedule A of your Federal taxes.

Does not apply. It's an error, he was overcharged over 3X.

Is this "registration fee" in Cali a tax on the assessed value of your car?

In Mass, this is what we call an "excise tax". On average, it's between $50 and $150 per year.

The registration renewal fee every two years is $25.
