Post S350 to be the only S-Class diesel in the States

http://www.benzinsider.com/2010/05/s...in-the-states/

The race for efficiency has every auto maker caught by the neck, and Mercedes-Benz is no exception. In its bid to keep up with the eco revolution, Daimler’s breadwinner has just announced plans for bringing into the US the European S350. It’ll pack a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 diesel that’s capable of 241 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque, a bit raunchier than its 235 hp and 398 ft-lb European version. It’ll be the only diesel S-Class to be sold in the US, so hopefully it’ll gain some unique appeal amidst its gasoline-powered sisters.

Wearing a BlueTec badge, the US version of the S350 will feature AdBlue urea injection technology to cleanse its exhaust system. Power goes through the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, and should give you a little bit better mileage, anywhere from 37 miles per gallon as in the European version. EPA will probably score it around 20 mpg on the highway. Even though those numbers may mean little to you, they’re still a stark difference from the rest of the S-Class lineage. Those would include the S550, the S600 and the S400 Hybrid, which fetches around 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg out on the freeway.

Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? What else can you expect from a Mercedes-Benz diesel? You get plenty of torque despite the ‘limited’ horsepower compared to the rest of the gas-powered S-Class. And hey, remember it’s a diesel.

By the way the article was worded I think the "20" was a typo and that they meant "30".

It's gotta be a typo. Anyway, that thing's got some madd torque. With that much torque, you won't really need that much HP.

This is interesting

But IMHO:
What's more interesting (at least for the Diesel S-class that will be brought Stateside) is that it will come with 4-MATIC all-wheel-drive as standard.

Hehe, it would be awesome if all MB S-class models would have 4-MATIC AWD as 100% standard equipment in the future.

The S400 didn't impress me much, but this I could get on board with.

+1 on the typo.

I wonder how this will do; do Americans like diesel luxury things?

no we dont. but its beginning to change when makers are introducing them into the market again. The govt is also featuring tax incentives when buying these alternative vehicles.

^ I didn't think so.

Well then, this will be interesting to see how well the car does, and how many of the sales are related to the government incentives.

If it wasn't for the fact that GM almost ruined diesel for Americans as well as the fact they used to billow smoke diesels would have been more mainstream here.

With that said, Mercedes sold a TON of W123 240D/300Ds in the US. If I had the $$$, I'd rock a S350 BlueTec. I'd feel comfortable taking it up to Tahoe, too with standard 4Matic.

I'm pretty surprised - never thought they would bring the S350, of any type, into the US.

We used to get an I-6 S-class in the 1990s. S 320.
