In the case of the USAF simulator...I cant count it because you did not actually pilot the craft, however, a C-5A Galaxy is a HUGE Aircraft...if you were a crewmember on board one, I will count it :P

My uncle and dad want me to put theirs up...

My uncle (works as a Cargo Aircraft Pilot, specializes in large/heavy cargo):

Antonov An-225 (I think thats what this is).

My dad once flew this:

^KC-135 Stratotanker Air-to-Air Refueling tanker plane...O_O. He was asked to copilot it in a pinch when he was in the USAF. But the rest of the time he just flew these:

You're right! The A-4 Skyraiders were on board for my first cruise, but after the overhaul, we hand the cats and gear needed to fling the larger A-6 off the deck. More efficient steam generators doubled our cats "throw weight" for sustained use. Otherwise you waited on the cat for a couple of minutes for the steam to arrive from the boilers.

We had a marine squadron embarked on that first (1967) deployment too, but not on the second. By that time most were flying close combat support in Vietnam. That close support mission was needed on the first cruise because we were "supporting" allies during and after the six-day war. Those jarheads have a real understanding and empathy for the groundpounders, and do a spectacular job of providing them cover.

Actually, Josh, in some cases, simulator time DOES count, but I'm not sure about military rules ........I guess it would depend on the capabilities and quality of the simulator itself.

With the top-level, most versatile simulators, however, the FAA and many airlines recognize it as legal flight time....today's advanced simulators are THAT good (they can even do some G-forces). It is often used as a way of training and certifying pilots while keeping operating costs down.....large aircraft can burn up a LOT of expensive fuel.

Did you mean A-1 Skyraider, Lil...the piston (radial)-engined attack plane? The A-4 (Skyhawk) was a different aircraft...a small, delta-winged single-engine jet.

Great thread..

In my previous job I drove a really big international truck, called the hippo. It was the biggest you can get without getting a special license to drive it. Oddly you get used to driving such a big truck, the only problem is it left me stranded on the top of a mountain..... twice!!

Yeah we had the A-4 Skyhawk jet (or Scooter), the AD-4 Skyraider (later assigned the A-1 designator) was moved onshore several years earlier. The "Able Dog" was a relic of the post WWII era, and while it served nobly in Vietnam as a ground attack aircraft protecting downed airmen, it was not generally used in coordinated attacks on enemy positions because it was terribly slow in the era of jets and missiles. It could carry a "whole junkyard" of nasty stuff to drop on the enemy, and it was rugged beyond belief, but in in 1957 the Skyraider went out of production, although it continued to serve from land bases until it was officially retired from Naval service in early 1968.

Being stranded at the TOP of a mountain might be worse than at the bottom. BRAAAAKES!!!

Looked something like this??

HIPPO is the name given to the truck due to the 4 function power package that the truck carried. Truck had air, electric, hydraulic as well as crane operation.
