Correct, its the mpg and the poor ride quality from short wheelbase that is the problem with the IQ and the Smart. At some point, you really do need more displacement so that the engine isn't trying so hard

if this had a lower starting price it would have probably done better. like $12-$14k would have made more sense. like the article say, at $16k you might as well get a corolla.
