Interesting. The last new VW's I reviewed, here on the East Coast, if I remember correctly, were 4/50 drivetrain, too. But...if you are correct, so be it.

Well, either way, it really doesn't matter now, IF you consider that the 5/60 and 3/36 are now in line with most other lower-priced makes. As some posters have noted, however, VW's have a lot of electrical problems, so that warranty will probably be needed, even if it is only 3/36.

Slightly off-topic, maybe, but I wonder where FKL is. He was a true VW/Audi fan, if I ever saw one. I can't imagine him NOT chiming in here.

hey Mike, if possible when you drive the GTI (and if you are bored) can you please try to drive both the DSG and the 6spd manual?

I know the DSG is a good tranny, my wife's TT 2.0T has it.

Trust me.....driving a GTI is anything but boring.

I may not be able to do both trannies at once, however, as many VW shops don't keep a lot of GTIs in stock. If not, I'll do one at a time as conditions allow....and just update the review as necessary.

GOOD tranny? From a driver's standpoint, one of the best....though it is quite complex mechanically and sometimes unreliable. Certainly, though, it is one of my favorites I look forward to DSG/S-Tronic reviews like I do BMW steering/chassis systems.

I considered a Jetta around 2001 and if I remember correctly the b2b warranty was 2/24!! Talk about cheap.

They might have shortened to the bumper to bumper, but they added in scheduled maintenance being covered.

I think it really depends on the luck of the draw when it comes to getting a VW. Either you luck out and get something of a gem that rarely has problems, or you get a lemon that's so aggravating you swear you'll never buy another VW. Same seems to be true with Audi.

My father's Jetta Sportwagen TDI has had absolutely zero problems since he purchased it last June, and he told me the last time he was so happy with a car purchase was back when he had his old '79 Toyota Corona, which he drove until it rusted out.

Granted, that's not a long time yet, but from the comments you tend to read here and elsewhere, his VW should have short circuited, fallen apart, caught on fire and exploded by this point.

woops just realized they downgraded the warranty. I initially thought the thread was about VW increasing the length of the warranties..

This is a mistake, especially in a market where GM and Hyundai are doing 100k warranties

I think this is the problem though on the internet (especially Asian automotive forums). Everyone thinks the first pothole you hit with a VW and the car is done.

I almost didnt buy my 2006 Jetta 2.0T/GLI when it was new due to all of the negative hype on the internet. (I have owned Toyota, Honda, Nissan etc). I purchased it over a 2006 TSX and dont regret a day that I did.

Its been very reliable (No better or worse than any other brand I have owned), loads of fun to drive and it appears to hold its value well as its worth more than what the buyout was. All of this is the reason why I bought out the lease in November. I know others will have different stories but the VW's made today are nothing like the ones in the 90's that everyone still seems to refer to when it comes to reliability IMO.

So all those who claim VW quality has greatly improved, I wonder what they have to say now .
