Out of Warranty
Moral: If you have to pour your beer on a fire, you were underequipped!
Seriously though, I've seen a lot of video and several actual tire fires, and they are extremely dangerous. Local firefighters have told me NEVER to approach a burning autombile from the side if the tires are still inflated. If they "burn through" they will pop, hurling steel belts, chunks of burning rubber and goo, seriously injuring anyone nearby.
If you are going to fight an underhood fire, approach from the FRONT of the car, sweeping a good blast of dry chemical under the car and on the inside of the front tires. Then apply chemical to the outside of the front tires before opening the hood and spraying down that area too. Remember, a 5 lb extinguisher is only good for about 10 seconds - use your powder to best effect, aiming at the base of the flames. Don't stand closer than eight feet to the fire for your own safety and to prevent spreading the fire with the nozzle blast.
Pouring beer or any other small amount of water will not do any good if the fire has progressed to the fuel system, it will only spread it. You can go in with a couple of 2 1/2" water lines and spray a fuel fire into submission, but it has to be a relatively small fire and you need a LOT of water. This is for the pros only.
For your own safety and that of othes, carry a minimum 5 lb Class ABC extinguisher in your trunk at all times. Mount it on a fender well or somewhere you won't have to dig around to find it. I've seen several nice cars burn to the ground that could have been saved with just a small extinguisher, and put out a couple too. Every time you wax the car, take the extinguisher out, check the gauge, and shake it up. In takes only a couple months of vibration to pack that powder down into a solid mass.
