Default Sales of first dedicated Lexus hybrid hit 10,000 in first month

To put that number into perspective, Lexus Japan sold just 25,945 cars in the year 2008!

http://mdn.mainichi.jp/mdnnews/busin...na004000c.html

Orders for Lexus' first dedicated hybrid, the HS250h, reached 10,000 units in its first month, smashing its sales target of 500, parent company Toyota Motor Corp. said.

The waiting list for the HS250h is now six months long. Advance orders stood at 3,000 units.

The hybrid sedan can reach 23 kilometers to the liter, a fuel efficiency on par with that of Toyota's Vitz compact. The basic model has a sticker price of 3.95 million yen.

Were the forecasters high? Too much Saki? How the hell is the target 500 and they sell 10 grand? WTF?

Your data is amazing, 10k in a month for one model and 38k for the year?

I expect it to do well in the U.S. also.

You are not alone

JApan though is a completely different market than here and they are much quicker to embrace quirky and economic.

Looks like Lexus Japan has a target-focused hit on its hands. This car seems much more focused on the smaller market that Japanese buyers like.

Also, just a correction, 34,803 was the sales total for Lexus Japan in 2007. In 2008, it was lower because of the financial crisis, which makes the 10,000 number very welcome for 2009; just to compare in 2006, they had 12,000 orders for the first month of 4LS sales, which was their breakout hit that year.

Good news for Lexus. I would think that my dad would probably prefer an HS to his IS. The IS is nice, but if your going to drive a "slow" vehicle you might as well get 35 MPG doing it.

Oops thanks for the correction. It's 25,945 for the year 2008. Edited my OP already.

I knew the model was popular in Japan, but not THAT popular. 10K sales in the first month? Incredible!

So now both the Prius and HS have become smash hits in Japan, with both models having waiting lists several months long. This could really affect supply of the HS and Prius in other markets worldwide.

While 10k is a lot (we're talking leased 3-series numbers), the 500 target is a joke. Anything will look good when you set a target so low Toyota already knew they were going to sell thousands of these.

We'll see. Prius sales continue to remain high. Also all of the Toyota/Lexus hybrids, even the low-volume models have maintained consistent sales over the past few years.
