Hmm...a dealer I went to said the car doesn't have to be running and they will tow it there if they have to. A different dealer said it had to be in driving conditions which the site clearly states.

I really don't see why it has to be in running conditions because they're not allowed to sell the motor or drive train.

They will sell other parts from the car and then dispose the rest of it.

In fact, they're required under the law to disable the engine by draining the oil, putting in a sodium silicate solution, and running the engine at high RPMs until it seizes and will not restart. There's some truly horrific videos of the procedure on youtube. On a non-running car, they could always just swap the fluids, verify that it doesn't start, and say they killed it.

One of my coworkers traded in a 2000 Mercury Villager that by his estimate was worth $200 at best (huge rust problem, poor running, previous rat infestation) for a 2009 Highlander 4-banger and got the full $4500.

The idea behind cash for clunkers I believe is to remove cars that have poor gas mileage. If your car can't start to begin with, there is no point for them to buy your clunker.

unfortunately, I have a clunker in the front of my house which is my dad's and it does not qualify. Cars that are traded in must be less than 25 years old, and the production date of his 1984 SEC500 is january, which is over the age limit by 6 months. sucks.

he was looking at the volkswagon rabbit to replace it.

1990 560SEL for IS250. Great commuter car. Already put 800 miles on it in two weeks.

A 1984 500sec is not a clunker, you hold on to that car for dear life and never let go haha

That didn't look like the cars.gov website, so it looks like it might be a dealer version before the car is being traded

Your GS4 isnt worth more than $3,500-4,500? I would think it is unless its like extremely beat or something. What year is it?

Apparently not to the local Lexus dealers... I've take it to both local dealers and they wont budge over $2K. They say it's mainly because of the high mileage. I have 198k on it... Other than that... it's in great condition.

For the people that bought, are you still getting a good deal on the new car you're buying? A friend of mine is looking to offload their old Dodge Durango for a new RAV4 and the dealers aren't willing to move much off MSRP on the new car. RAV4's are apparently a hot commodity, especially with the Cash For Clunkers, hard to find a dealer with good selection in stock, but I mean come on... only a few hundred under MSRP??
