Daimler unloaded their minority stake in Chrysler

Ford has an Indian company cast their engine blocks, GM buys engines from Shanghai GM and chassis/HVAC components from Hyundai MOBIS and GM Daewoo - not to mention the Chevy Aveo is a Daewoo. Mopar builds their V8s in Saltillo, Mexico and their fours are made by a joint Mopar/Mitsu/Hyundai venture.

We have a beater 1996 Nissan Quest - the only Nissan in it is the powertrain, everything else from the firewall on is Ford.

This goes both ways. Those who refuse to buy American cars, for whatever reason, are using the same logic of those who refuse to buy import cars.

GM some how convince the Chinese people that Buick is a high quility luxury car, and Buick does very well over there. I am not saying Buicks are not nice cars, but in the pass, here in the US, some old Buick have had their share of problems. In China, they dont have those memories of those old Buick nightmares. Here in the US, we do, and its up to the American car companies to change our perception of the US automobiles.
It's more than people "associating" American cars with low quality. American car companies have yet to prove that they can, across the board, consistently produce well made, top quality, reliable cars that people want to buy.

It's true that American cars are better than they used to be, and it's true that some American makes are in the top 10 in reliability, but that's not enough.

Buick scores highly in reliability, but what else? My mother in law's 2006 Lucerne has 4 speed auto tranny. 4 speeds? Really? The Japanese were making 5 speeds by the late 90s. What about customer service? Does Buick strive to out-Lexus Lexus? I can't speak from experience, but I would be surprised. Free loaners? Free wi fi, snacks, etc? Considering you are sharing the service area with a GMC dealership, probably not...

What about minivans? Chrysler sells lots of minivans, but very few auto journals that I have see put Chrysler's minivan as the best. Meanwhile, the Odyssey and the Sienna go back and forth as top van each time the new model debuts. Chrysler sells the sizzle with some good features like stow and go seats and dual dvds, but can't make a well built reliable car to save its life.

There are very few American cars that are consistently ranked among the best in class--it is limited to a few models such as the Chevy Malibu, Caddy CTS and a few others. And even the CTS has shown to be unreliable (at least that's what Consumer Reports says). Meanwhile, companies like Honda and Toyota constantly have many models at or near the top.

The Accord, Camry, Civic, Corolla nameplates have been around for years because those cars have stellar reputations. Meanwhile, American companies ditch names like Taurus (and revive it!), Celebrity, Cavalier, Lumina, Blazer, Bronco, New Yorker, etc, etc, because they don't want the negative baggage tagging along when they introduce a new model.

You just can't deny that American cars have quite a ways to go, at this point. Let's just hope they make it there.

Damn I just got a really good laugh from that video. God I hate American cars even more than I did before. The desperation is pathetic. Domestic cars will never be as cool as foriegn cars. Even in Japan people dont want the Lexus vehicles that we all covet. We all naturally want whats differnt . Its the drive that allows us to evolve

To be honest, I doubt many would be swayed by such advertising. Many Americans (and all Californians) love their cars too much to be swayed by silly propaganda one way or another. People were still buying Ford Escorts and Chevy Corsairs when better Asian alternatives were available and to them their car was better in every respect-good for them.

I really care less what kind of car someone else buys as long as I do not have to wake up at 3am because they are broken down somewhere. What I have parked in my garage is all that matters.
