JDM Toyota Land Cruiser adds 318hp V8
Toyota has announced that its Japanese domestic market (JDM for short) Land Cruiser V8 has received a new engine and transmission transplant. Beginning from May 6, 2009, the Land Cruiser will be offered with a newly-developed 4.6-liter V8 Dual VVT-i gasoline engine that produces 318-horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 460Nm or 339.3-lbs/ft of maximum torque at 3,400 rpm versus the previous 4.7-liter V8's 288HP and 445Nm or 328-lb/ft respectively. The 4.6L V8 is mated to an also new 6-speed automatic transmission that replaces the previous 5-speed auto.
Since Europe, Australia and several other markets around the world get the same 4.7-liter V8 engine as the Japanese-spec model, we suspect that it's only a matter of time before Toyota announces the change to the 318HP 4.6-liter V8 and the six-speed auto transmission.
New powerplant aside, the JDM Land Cruiser's range is also enhanced with the addition of a new trim level called ZX.

This is a no brainer. The 4.7 has passed its time. While a good, durable, trusted engine..the 4.7 needs to be laid to rest.
As for the 4.6. I am excited. The new 4.6 will feature some new type of fuel saving technology. I can't remember what it is exactly but I think it was called cooled exhaust gas recirculation. The new 6 speed is not really new. It is the same 5 speed now modified with an extra overdrive.

There is no word yet on what engine the new GX will use. I highly doubt we will see the 5.7 in the GX. Toyota does make the 5.7 in small batches for the LC/LX570 but most likely the GX will be using the 4.6 as well as the 4runner.

I have always like the Land Cruiser. I think it is the ultimate stealth car for luxury in the United States. Most people have no idea that it exsists or what the price for one is.
The pic posted by 1SICKLEX is actually a Land Cruiser equipped with the same cameras, 20 inch rims, AVS suspension as found on the LX570. Some also come with the Lexus HDD hard drive.

Not true. They are about the same.
Toyota Australia reports the 4.7/5speed LC has a combined fuel economy of 14.5/100km
Lexus Canada reports the 5.7/6speed has a combined of 14.5/100km.
One engine (5.7) gets better highway economy while the other (4.7) gets better city economy. When combined they are the same.
