Ferrari recalls 1900 F430 spiders
We’ve seen a number of cases of Ferrari supercars going up in flames over the past couple of years but usually these are one off occurrences and the reasons behind the fiery end usually goes by unreported. In the latest twist of the ongoing Ferrari fire saga, the Italian supercar manufacturer has decided to issue a recall on its F430 Spider model.
According to Ferrari, the fire hazard involves the hydraulic hoses for the convertible roof. These hoses are located inside of the engine compartment and are susceptible to hair-line cracks from excessive engine heat. A fire can result from the hydraulic fluid leaking on the engine and combusting.
Heat from the 4.3L V8 engine can cause cracks in the convertible roof’s hydualic lines The recall is targeting 2005 to 2007 model year F430 Spiders, affecting more than 1,950 cars. The recall is being conducted together with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and will require owners to take their cars to dealers to receive a modification for the engine bay. The service will be performance free of charge and currently available for F430 Spider owners.
No other models have been announced as part of the recall, which means the latest Scuderia Spider 16M model is likely to be unaffected.
I can't even imagine the rage I would be experiencing after I spent more than a quarter of a million on a car, waited for 2-3 years for delivery, and then it goes up in flames.

I found some of these pics. Upon doing a little research it seems that this phenomenon of flaming Ferrari F430 spiders is well known in the Italian Super car community

Except those cars in the photos are hard tops.
My buddy Chris' F360 (hard top) caught fire, but only because he went off a
freeway offramp at 130 and hit a light pole mid-car, splitting it in half.
He walked away, thankfully. He admitted that it was a foolish thing to do.
That's what insurance is for... it's just a car.

Here is another little snipet I found on this subject. Its a shame and frankly kind of embarassing for Ferrari
Ferrari has announced that they will be recalling certain models of the 2005 through 2007 F40 Spider. They stated the defect involves the hydraulic hoses for the convertible top that are locaterd inside of the engine compartment. The heat from the engine may cause hair line cracks to form in the hoses which may result in fluid leakage from the convertible top hydraulic system.
This leakage, in turn, will cause the convertible top warning light to illuminate and if not remidied, could ultimately leak fluid into the engine compartment causing smoke and a fire, rendering the vehicle inoperable andpossibly resulting in a crash.
Dealers will install protective heat shields over the convertible top hydraulic lines to insulate them from the heat of the engine compartment. This service will be preformed free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during Febuary 2009. Owners may contact Ferrari at 201-816-2600.

People don't realize how much heat is coming off of those insanely powerful motors. Back in the day it was understood that Ferrari's and Lambo's overheat but this is ridiculous
