In S trim, the Corolla does not have "SUV-like wheel gap" and it is also not "disproportionately tall".

All I'll say is that the Corolla is the small car I'd buy for my daughter. The 3 is the small car I'd buy for myself.

The small car I'd buy for myself would be the STI. Probably not comparable though.

Not exactly the same price-range, but if I were shopping for a small car, I would get an Impreza (not sure which variant) or I would get a Mini.

the mazda3 looks good for the price.
i don't understand why some carmakers have to make cars in this price range look so ugly.
they can mold the sheet metal in any way they want, and make good looking cheap cars.
mazda has to make cooler looking cars because, unlike toyota, consumers wont buy mazdas if they're as ugly and plain as toyotas.
the corolla could be as ugly as this, and 1000000 people would still buy it up because it has the corolla nameplate.

here's the profile with camo.
where is the disproportion? esp considering the size of this car???
it's as disproportioned as an IS250.
looks balanced to me.
I would never buy it though, just because it's a mazda.

But it has the horribly tacked on 'body kit' with gaps.

I find the current Mazda 3 one of the best looking sedans out there and by far the best looking, best designed small car. This is not new to Mazda, the Protege before it was also the best looking car in its class.
The Corolla may sell in droves but it is beyond bland and it has the same problem the Infiniti M35/45 has and the Dodge Challenger. Its way to tall and way to thin. The Corolla looks worse than both being just so awkward, huge wheel gap that Toyota thinks a huge tacked on bodykit will fix.
It doesn't fix anything, it just makes the car look even taller and thinner.
The Corolla has nothing on the Mazda 3 from a design standpoint. This seems to easily continue with the new Mazda 3.

Mazda has got some pretty nice looking cars these days.....if only they were reliable like a Toyota they would realy kick some ass in the market....well Ford is what taking them down.

According to who? Know too many people currently or previously employed at Mazda dealerships.

well the new 09 corolla does break away a little from the bland ones in the past.....they are realizing that they have to make them with more character these days for people to buy besides being brutaly reliable!!
